The sMS-1000SQ Eunhasu is a music server and network player from SOtM of Korea, named after the Linux-based Eunhasu operating system the company wrote for it. Earlier versions of the sMS-1000SQ ran other Linux and Windows software on the same hardware platform, and this edition ships with the tX-USBexp audio USB card as standard. Pricing started at USD 3,000 at introduction, with the final figure depending on the storage, output and clock options chosen, and in Australia it costs AUD 5,500.
Key specs that matter
A 64 GB SSD holds the operating system as standard, and internal music storage can be added up to 8 TB on a hard disk or 2 TB on an SSD. PCM playback reaches 32 bit and 768 kHz, DSD goes to DSD512, and the software can upsample PCM to 384 kHz. The tX-USBexp output is a USB 3.0 port supporting USB Audio Class 2.0, with its own external power jack and a switch that cuts the 5 V line. There are also AES/EBU, coaxial and optical outputs limited to 24 bit and 192 kHz, plus an analogue stage with 1.9 Vrms balanced and 0.95 Vrms unbalanced outputs, 0.005% THD+N at 1 kHz and a bandwidth reaching 100 kHz at -3 dB. Power enters as +19 V DC with a 60 W maximum. The case measures 360 x 68 x 240 mm and weighs just over 4 kg.
Engineering and use context
Eunhasu bundles several playback engines, so the box can act as a Roon Ready endpoint or a Roon Server core, run MinimServer, work as a DLNA renderer with OpenHome support, and host MPD, Logitech Media Server, Squeezelite, the HQPlayer Network Audio Adapter and Shairport. Files on a NAS or on internal drives are shared over NFS, SMB or DLNA, and USB hard drives are recognised automatically when plugged in. Qobuz, TIDAL and internet radio are handled directly. SOtM fits an ultra low jitter clock, ultra low noise regulators and an active noise canceller circuit on the board. An optional Blu-ray drive allows CD ripping. The separate sCLK-EX module, priced from USD 700 at launch with four simultaneous clock outputs, can be added later to reclock the digital and analogue sections. Operating temperature is rated from 10 to 30 degrees C.
Pairing
The usual partner is a USB DAC with Audio Class 2.0 support that accepts DSD512, fed from the tX-USBexp port. Owners wanting cleaner power can run it from the SOtM sPS-1000 linear supply, whose 18 to 21 V rail covers the server input while another rail feeds the USB card jack. Several sMS-1000SQ units, or Roon and Logitech Media Server endpoints, can be grouped into a multi-room setup.
Alternatives
The SOtM sMS-1000SQ Windows Edition keeps a similar chassis but runs Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials on an Intel Atom N2800 with 4 GB of RAM.
