The VRDS-701T is a TEAC compact disc transport issued as a commemorative model for the firm's 70th anniversary. It drops the converter stage completely and only spins and reads the disc, handing its bitstream to a separate converter. At its heart is a newly developed version of VRDS, the Vibration-Free Rigid Disc-Clamping System that TEAC originated. TEAC USA lists it at USD 3,299.99, with black and silver versions.

Key specs that matter

Pressed audio CDs and recordable CD-R or CD-RW media in CD-DA form will play, though 8 cm singles will not. Outputs are one RCA coaxial socket at 0.5 Vp-p and 75 ohm and one TOS optical socket to JEITA RC5720C. A BNC clock input takes 10 MHz at 50 ohm, as a TTL-level square wave or a 0.5 to 1.0 Vrms sine wave. A built-in MQA core decoder sends MQA CDs out digitally at 88.2 kHz. Two 3.5 mm mono mini jacks handle 12 V trigger in and trigger through, the latter supplying up to 100 mA, and an RS-232C port connects to control systems. Standby draw is 0.4 W. The casing measures 444 x 111 x 333 mm and weighs 10.1 kg.

Engineering and use context

VRDS clamps the disc to an aluminium turntable of the same diameter, adding inertial mass that steadies rotation and cuts vibration in both the disc and the mechanism. Flattening warped discs also improves the optical axis alignment between pickup and pit surface, which lowers servo current and reading errors. TEAC began with a drive proven in professional use and added these VRDS parts. The turntable bridge is a torus-shaped resin part fixed on one side only, so vibration from the mechanism does not travel across to the other side. The whole mechanism sits semi-floating on a sub-chassis, isolating motor vibration from the main chassis and outside vibration from the drive. Removing the DAC freed room for larger parts in the output circuitry. Two high-capacity toroidal transformers, one for the digital control section and one for the CD mechanism, sit on a floating mount away from the bottom panel. The side cooling fins are cut to different lengths to avoid sympathetic resonance, board screws are kept to a minimum, and three machined steel pinpoint feet have deliberate play in their joint with the base.

Pairing

TEAC designed the transport alongside the UD-701N from the same series, whose discrete converter adds full MQA decoding, though a converter from another maker with an S/PDIF socket works too. The MQA stream needs a DAC with MQA rendering for full decoding, and the clock input lets the whole system share one external clock generator.
