The PD-505T is a disc transport made by the Japanese firm TEAC for the Reference 500 Series of half-width components. It carries no digital to analogue converter of its own and only reads the disc and sends the data out to an external DAC. TEAC based its drive on a design used in the company's professional products, and the model carried a US price of USD 1,699.99. TEAC has since discontinued it and names the PD-507T as the replacement.
Key specs that matter
Supported media are audio CD plus CD-R and CD-RW discs. Two digital outputs are fitted - a gold-plated RCA coaxial socket delivering 0.5 Vp-p at 75 ohm and a TOS optical socket to the JEITA RC5720C standard. A gold-plated BNC connector accepts a 10 MHz clock, either as a TTL-level rectangle wave or as a sine wave between 0.5 and 1.0 Vrms. The chassis measures 290 x 84.5 x 248.8 mm including protrusions and weighs 4.0 kg. Mains versions cover AC 120 V at 60 Hz and AC 220-240 V at 50/60 Hz, and the box includes the RC-1338 remote handset, two AAA batteries and three foot pads.
Engineering and use context
The drive starts from the TEAC CD-5020A, a mechanism with a long record in professional applications, and adds semi-floating mounting so that chassis vibration is not fed back into the disc reader. A newly developed drive control circuit runs the motor more smoothly, and BTL drive lowers switching noise along the path from the spindle motor to the actuator of the pickup lens. Separate toroidal core transformers feed the CD drive, the display and the output circuits, each through its own discrete supply. Timing comes from an internal crystal oscillator with low phase noise, while the external clock input lets the unit lock to a master clock generator in a synchronised digital system. The enclosure is all metal to shield against outside electromagnetic noise, with side panels of 8 mm thick aluminium. The top panel is only partly fixed, held by the side panels alone, and the base stands on the Stressless Foot design with three loosely connected support points.
Pairing
Because the transport has no converter, TEAC states that an external unit such as the UD-505-X or NT-505-X is needed, and both share the 290 mm width of the Reference 500 Series for a neat stack. Any DAC with a coaxial or optical S/PDIF input will accept its signal, and systems already built around an external master clock can tie the transport into the same reference.
Alternatives
The TEAC PD-507T is the CD transport that the maker lists as the successor to this model.
