The SCD1.3R is the entry-level SACD player from Shanling of Shenzhen, China, listed at USD 1,699 in black or silver, and is the version of the SCD1.3 that moves to an R2R digital-to-analogue converter. This converter belongs to the second generation of Shanling's in-house R2R design, first used in the SCD3.3, and here it is paired with a disc drive, streaming inputs and a dedicated headphone amplifier.
Key specs that matter
The disc drive plays SACD, CD and MQA CD. Each analogue channel is available on RCA and XLR, which can run as a fixed line-out or as a variable pre-out. The RCA output delivers 2.5 V rms and the XLR output 5.0 V rms, and both cover 20 Hz to 40,000 Hz within 0.1 dB. A TPA6120 amplifier drives the 6.35 mm single-ended headphone socket with 1.1 W into 32 ohm or 153 mW into 300 ohm, an output impedance of 4.7 ohm and a THD+N of 0.001%. The chassis measures 280 x 280 x 96 mm.
Engineering and use context
The R2R module uses 212 resistors with 0.01% tolerance for 24-bit conversion, arranged as a 19-bit architecture with a 4-bit compensating code and an assistive push-pull differential circuit. Control runs through an LG touch panel with a resolution of 854 x 358, running Shanling's MTouch system, backed by physical buttons, a volume wheel, a remote control and the Eddict Player app. With a hybrid disc inserted, a front button switches between the SACD and CD layers, and an indicator lights blue for SACD and red for CD. Firmware updates arrive over Wi-Fi or from a USB drive. Rated power consumption is 40 W. Beyond discs, the player reads files from USB drives of up to 2 TB in formats including DSD, DXD, FLAC, WAV, AIFF, ALAC and APE, receives Bluetooth 5.0 streams in LDAC, aptX HD, aptX, AAC or SBC form, joins Wi-Fi networks and supports DLNA, AirPlay and NAS playback. An XMOS XU316 USB receiver accepts PCM up to 32-bit and 768 kHz and DSD512 from a computer, and coaxial and optical inputs take external digital sources.
Pairing
Digital outputs include coaxial, optical and I2S. A dedicated FPGA circuit makes the I2S output adjustable across ten of the most common HDMI pinout standards, improving compatibility with external DACs that accept I2S. On the coaxial and optical outputs SACD playback is limited to PCM at 88.2 kHz. The pre-out mode on RCA and XLR lets the SCD1.3R drive a power amp with no preamplifier in between, with the volume wheel setting the output level.
Alternatives
Shanling's SCD3.3 is a top-loading SACD player that combines the same second-generation R2R converter with a 12AT7 tube output stage.
