The SCD3.3 is a top-loading disc player for SACD and CD from Shanling of Shenzhen, China, released with a retail price of USD 3,899. Shanling announced it for November availability, and it was the first model to carry the second-generation in-house R2R digital-to-analogue converter and adds a vacuum tube stage to the analogue outputs, alongside streaming, USB and digital output functions.
Key specs that matter
The disc system is Shanling's own design built around the HD850 laser and plays SACD, CD and MQA-CD. Analogue signals leave through RCA at 2.45 V rms and XLR at 4.9 V rms. On both outputs Shanling lists a frequency response of 20 Hz to 40,000 Hz within 0.3 dB, 117 dB for dynamic range as well as for signal-to-noise ratio, THD+N of 0.15% and channel separation of 110 dB. The aluminium chassis measures 430 x 319 x 91 mm without the disc cover and weighs 10 kg. Rated power consumption is 66 W.
Engineering and use context
Shanling builds the 24-bit R2R ladder from resistors with 0.01% tolerance. The analogue output stage uses 12AT7 tubes, which sit under a dedicated tube cover. A dual transformer power supply feeds the circuits, and the rear panel carries a fused mains inlet with separate fuse ratings for 100 to 120 V and 220 to 240 V versions. Discs are loaded by lifting a hinged cover, limited to 56 degrees, and placing a clamp puck on top. Control comes through a 5 inch touch screen, front buttons, a remote and the Eddict Player app on a phone or tablet, and an Ingenic X2000 processor runs the system. An on-screen icon selects the SACD or CD layer of a hybrid disc. System settings include SyncLink, screen brightness, a lock screen, double-tap to wake and system updates. The player also reads USB drives of up to 2 TB with files in DSD, DXD, FLAC, WAV, AIFF, ALAC, APE and other formats, receives Bluetooth 5.0 in LDAC, aptX HD, AAC and SBC, and works as a DAC over its USB and coaxial inputs, taking PCM up to 768 kHz and 32-bit plus DSD512.
Pairing
Output modes are pre-out, line-out, coaxial, I2S and USB audio. Volume control is active only in pre-out mode, which lets the SCD3.3 feed a power amplifier. The I2S output uses an LVDS connection, is FPGA assisted, offers ten pinout modes and passes native DSD from SACD, while the USB audio output is not available during SACD playback.
Alternatives
Shanling's SCD1.3R is the brand's entry-level SACD player with the same second-generation R2R converter in a smaller chassis.
