The D1.5 is the SACD and CD player and transport of CH Precision, the Swiss company whose first product was the D1. The D1.5 replaces it with a new MORSe transport mechanism, designed and built in-house, while keeping the modular card-cage architecture that lets owners configure it as a transport, a player or both. It plays SACD, CD and MQA-CD.
Key specs that matter
For CD, the listed dynamic range exceeds 96 dB and signal-to-noise exceeds 120 dB. For SACD, both exceed 120 dB. The digital output board is standard and carries CH-Link HD, S/PDIF, AES/EBU and TosLink. Optional mono DAC boards turn the unit into a complete player. The chassis measures 440 x 440 x 133 mm and weighs 27 kg. Maximum power consumption is 100 W, with 1 W in standby, and the mains voltage is switchable between 100, 115 and 230 V.
Engineering and use context
MORSe, the Mechanically Optimized Reading System, mounts the optical pick-up and motor on a machined brass sled of almost 1 kg. This mass lowers the mechanical resonance frequency of the module far below that of typical transports and acts as a counterweight to the torque of the spinning disc. Four alpha-gel isolators decouple the sled from the chassis and filter vibration down to mains frequencies, so the disc's rotation does not reach the electronic boards and low-frequency vibration from the power supply does not disturb laser tracking. The disc clamp is made of PEEK polymer for grip and dimensional stability with the direct-drive motor. The sub-system sits in a 2 kg machined aluminium frame coupled directly to the heavy base, with an improved four-point grounding and levelling system. CH-Link HD sends high-resolution data, including DSD, directly to CH Precision's C1 or I1 converters. For CD replay, the owner can choose a raw MQA output or an MQB output. The optional DAC boards use CH Precision's PEtER spline filter for upsampling. A SYNC IO board allows the transport to lock to an external clock, and an X1 external power supply can be added. The system can grow from a single box to a multi-chassis digital front end without replacing the D1.5.
Pairing
As a transport, the D1.5 connects to CH Precision's C1.2 DAC over CH-Link HD, or to any converter via AES/EBU or S/PDIF. With DAC boards fitted, it drives a preamplifier directly.
Alternatives
CH Precision makes no other current disc player, and the D1 that the D1.5 replaced is the only earlier model of this category.
