The CDi-XR is an integrated CD player from Cyrus Audio of Britain and belongs to the XR range, which the company places above its Classic series. It follows the CDi, sits above both the CDi and the CDt in the Cyrus disc range, and keeps the half-width format of the earlier model. The UK price was GBP 2,195 and the US price USD 2,999, with a 2-year warranty. It plays Audio CD and CD-R discs only, with no SACD support and no digital inputs.
Key specs that matter
The player converts with a 32-bit second-generation QXR DAC built on the ESS Technology ES9028Q2M chip. Cyrus quotes a frequency response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz within 0.25 dB, channel separation above 110 dB at 1 kHz and above 90 dB at 20 kHz, a signal to noise ratio above 106 dBA and THD of 0.003% at minus 10 dB. Analogue output level is 2.1 V through an output impedance of 75 ohm, sample rate accuracy at 44.1 kHz is within 50 ppm and clock jitter is 75 pS. The back panel carries two RCA analogue pairs with no XLR, a coaxial and a TosLink S/PDIF output, MC-BUS in and out, a Mini-B USB socket for firmware and a multipin port for the PSU-XR. The unit measures 73 x 215 x 360 mm and weighs 3.8 kg.
Engineering and use context
The Servo Evolution engine, designed by Cyrus, spins the disc at 1x speed and aims to read each section of data once, then passes the stream to the audio circuits. Two dedicated microprocessors split the work, one running the transport and the other the user interface. Cyrus optimised the QXR platform for CD data with its own reconstruction filters, so the selectable digital filter of the chip is disabled. Power is fully segmented - the digital control circuits run from a dedicated high-efficiency supply, while the rest is fed by an over-specified linear supply with a custom low-noise toroidal transformer, and nine individual regulators distribute it to separate stages. The PSU-XR adds five independent regulated supplies, four of which the CDi-XR uses - two for the analogue audio, one for the motors and one for the PLL digital master clock. The half-width case is cast aluminium with heatsink fins, and the circuit boards are bolted to its top. An LCD with adjustable brightness, contrast and polarity is driven through a tree-style menu, and a backlit iR14 remote is included.
Pairing
The fixed-level output suits any line input, with XR amplifiers linked over MC-BUS for joint control. An outboard converter can use either S/PDIF output.
Alternatives
The Cyrus CDi from the Classic series is the earlier integrated player of the range, fitted with the first-generation QXR converter.
