The 40 CD is a half-width CD player from the British company Cyrus Audio, launched on 2 October 2024 as part of the 40 series alongside the 40 AMP integrated amplifier, the 40 ST streamer and the 40 PSU external power supply. Cyrus counts it as its 28th CD player since the PCM II of 1989. In Britain it was introduced at GBP 2,995, and the optional 40 PSU adds GBP 2,495. Despite its conversion chip being capable of high-resolution data, the 40 CD reads standard CDs only and has no SACD playback.
Key specs that matter
An ESS Sabre ES9039Q2M 32-bit chip turns the data into an analogue signal with HyperStream IV dual DAC architecture. Noise sits 117 dBA below full output, and THD+N is 0.002%. Two pairs of RCA line outputs are fitted, together with one coaxial and one optical digital output for feeding an external DAC. The case measures 88 x 220 x 365 mm and the player weighs 5.2 kg. Power draw is 30 W in use and under 0.5 W in standby, and the supply accepts 100 to 230 V mains.
Engineering and use context
There is no drawer - a slot loader takes the disc, the same mechanism fitted to the brand's XR series, and the transport runs Cyrus's in-house Servo Evolution software. The servo locks the disc firmly to limit jitter, and Cyrus states that its SE players produce around 20% fewer data errors than its earlier non-SE CD players. The power architecture has been redesigned and segmented - a separate high-efficiency supply is reserved for the digital control circuits, while nine individual stage regulators smooth and distribute power to the remaining sections. A socket on the rear accepts the 40 PSU, which replaces the internal supply for owners who want to upgrade later. An RJ45 Ethernet port and a USB-A socket are there for firmware updates rather than for streaming or file playback. The front carries an 89 mm full colour TFT screen whose brightness can be adjusted and which hides itself until someone approaches, and operation is by touch-sensitive controls with no physical mains switch. The casing is anodised aluminium with a brushed black finish.
Pairing
The two analogue output pairs let the player drive an integrated amplifier and a second device, such as a headphone amplifier or a recorder, at the same time. Its natural partner is the 40 AMP, and a single universal remote covers every 40 series unit, with direct buttons for the CD, streamer, amplifier and PPA phono preamplifier. Owners who prefer another converter can route the coaxial or optical output to an outboard DAC or to the digital input of a receiver.
Alternatives
Within the XR range Cyrus offers the CDi-XR integrated CD player, with a second-generation QXR DAC and a 73 x 215 x 360 mm die-cast aluminium case.
