The Victa Elite Sub 252 A is the active subwoofer of the HECO Victa Elite series, the entry range of the German brand. The series is built so that owners can assemble anything from a compact stereo setup to a full home cinema, and it includes the 202 and 302 bookshelf models, the three-way 702 tower and the Center 102. HECO lists the subwoofer at EUR 549, in black or white with curved side panels.

A single 250 mm long-throw woofer is mounted in the front panel. Hardened paper forms the cone, and the driver is powered by a heavy-duty voice coil and a ferrite magnet system. The built-in Class AB amplifier delivers 100 W continuous and 200 W peak. HECO gives the low-frequency limit as 22 Hz, and the crossover can be varied between 50 Hz and 150 Hz. The cabinet measures 322 mm wide, 458 mm high and 405 mm deep, and the subwoofer weighs 15.9 kg. The unit runs on 220 V mains at 50 Hz.

Engineering and use context

HECO builds the box from solid MDF with elaborate internal bracing to keep it stable under the pressure of the long-throw driver. It works as a bass reflex design with two optimised reflex tubes that are screwed into the cabinet rather than glued. Active equalisation of the frequency response is built into the amplifier stage to get the most from the driver within this cabinet volume. On the rear panel the owner finds a level control, the adjustable crossover and a switchable phase setting, which helps the subwoofer move in time with the main speakers. Signal arrives through an RCA line input or a dedicated LFE input for the low-frequency effects channel of an AV receiver. An automatic standby circuit wakes the amplifier once music is present and puts it to sleep after the signal ends, and a mains switch allows full shutdown. Rubber spikes are supplied for the base.

Its variable filter allows the Sub 252 A to join compact bookshelf speakers such as the Victa Elite 202 or 302, or add only the lowest octave beneath a floorstander such as the 702. Hooked to an AV receiver through its LFE socket, the Sub 252 A then follows the handover point chosen in the receiver bass management. For stereo use, the line input connects to the preamplifier or subwoofer output of an integrated amplifier.
