The Aurora XT Sub 30A is an active subwoofer from HECO, the German loudspeaker brand, and the only subwoofer in the Aurora XT series. It is priced at EUR 649, above the XT 300 at EUR 399 and the XT Center 30 at EUR 249 and below the XT 1000 at EUR 999, and designed to complete 5.1 systems built from the Aurora XT 300 bookshelf speaker, the XT 700 and XT 1000 floorstanders and the XT Center 30. A front-firing driver and two tuned reflex ports provide the bass output.

Key specs that matter

HECO fits a 300 mm long-throw unit with a hardened paper cone, facing forward. A Class A/B amplifier delivers 125 W RMS and 250 W peak. Frequency response runs from 20 Hz to 150 Hz. A low-pass control covers 50 Hz to 150 Hz, and there are controls for phase at 0 or 180 degrees, level, auto standby and a mains switch. Inputs are stereo low-level RCA sockets. The cabinet measures 350 x 465 x 415 mm, or 445 mm deep with spikes and terminals, and is made of MDF finished in black silk-matte lacquer with wood accents.

Engineering and use context

A long-throw driver can move its cone further than a standard woofer, which lets a unit of this size move more air for low frequencies without needing a larger cabinet. Hardening the paper cone raises its stiffness so it keeps its shape under these excursions. The enclosure is a bass-reflex design with two tuned, airflow-optimised ports that add output around the tuning frequency and are shaped to reduce air noise. Extended Surface Dampers, which HECO abbreviates as ESD, are applied inside the cabinet to reduce vibration of the panels. Setting the low-pass point lets the sub take over where bookshelf models such as the XT 300 run out, or hand over lower down beside the XT 700 and XT 1000 towers. With the phase switch, its output can be brought into step with the main pair. Auto standby switches the amplifier on when a signal is detected and off after a period without one. A magnetic cloth cover protects the driver, and spikes support the cabinet on the floor. The front-firing layout means the driver faces the room directly, so the subwoofer can stand beside furniture or a television cabinet without a gap underneath.

Pairing

The XT Sub 30A connects to the subwoofer or LFE output of an AV receiver in a 5.1 system with the Aurora XT speakers, or to a stereo amplifier's preamplifier output. It suits rooms of about 20 m2.
