The SUB 601 took over from the earlier SUB 600 in the range of Canton Elektronik, the loudspeaker maker based in Weilrod, Germany, as a particularly compact active subwoofer, and unlike the Power Sub and SUB 300 families it uses a sealed enclosure instead of a passive radiator. At launch the German price was EUR 449. Buyers can order the small cabinet with a high-gloss surface in either black or white, and Canton names a small Vento set, the Chrono SL series and CD series speakers as examples of what it can be combined with.
Key specs that matter
Everything rests on a single 213 mm (8.4 inch) woofer with a cone of cellulose and graphite, mounted so that it fires down toward the floor. The built-in amplifier reaches 200 W rated and 280 W music power. The response is given as 30 to 200 Hz, and the crossover runs from 50 to 200 Hz. The cabinet measures 27 x 33.3 x 29.5 cm and weighs 8.5 kg. Standby draw is 0.32 W.
Engineering and use context
With neither a port nor a passive membrane, the SUB 601 stops at 30 Hz, compared with 20 to 25 Hz for the vented Power Sub models. The downfiring woofer is fitted with a wave surround. SC technology in the amplifier module is Canton's protection against overload and distortion. The rear panel provides continuously variable phase, crossover frequency and volume, plus switches for amplifier mode and room compensation, and an automatic switch-on and switch-off circuit monitors the input. The feet can be raised or lowered, and the base is prepared to take spikes or absorber pads. Canton ships it in a 40.5 x 35 x 35 cm carton that weighs 9.6 kg with the contents, which are the SUB 601, a power cord and a manual. Warranty is two years.
Pairing
The subwoofer can be driven either at line level or at speaker level, and Canton lists both connection types on the back panel together with the controls. Two RCA inputs suit AV receivers and preamplifiers, and there is also a line-level output. The two high-level inputs connect to the speaker terminals of an amplifier and accept banana plugs, which makes it usable with a stereo integrated that has no subwoofer socket.
Alternatives
The Canton SUB 501 is another subwoofer in Canton's current range, listed in Germany at EUR 619.
