The Sub 600P is an active sealed-box subwoofer built by Focal in Saint-Etienne, France. Focal positions it as the entry point of its separate subwoofer offering and designed it to work in two-channel music systems as well as in home cinema installations. It is sold as a single unit in black, with a US list price of USD 1,449.

Key specs that matter

A single Polyflex-coned driver of 30 cm (12 inch) diameter is powered by a class D amplifier that Focal rates at 600 W dynamic and 300 W RMS continuous. Frequency response runs from 28 Hz to 270 Hz within 3 dB, and output is 6 dB down at 26 Hz. A variable low-pass filter covers 40 Hz to 200 Hz. The input section has RCA sockets for the left and right channels plus a separate LFE input. The enclosure measures 400 mm high, 400 mm wide and 425 mm deep, and the unit weighs 21 kg. The front baffle carries a high-gloss black coat, the rest of the MDF cabinet has a brushed black surface, and the fabric grille is held by magnets.

Engineering and use context

Focal chose a closed enclosure instead of a reflex port. With no port there is no column of air rushing through a tube when the cone moves far, which is the source of the parasitic noise Focal says the design avoids, and the rear wave of the woofer stays inside the box. A sealed box needs more cone travel and more amplifier power to reach the same low-frequency level as a ported cabinet of similar volume, so the Polyflex cone was made stiffer and heavier than usual to cope with high power. Class D amplification keeps heat low inside a cabinet that has no port to move air around the electronics. An AutoStandby circuit switches the subwoofer into standby after the input goes quiet and brings it back once playback resumes, and the function can be switched off so the unit stays on permanently.

Pairing

Because it accepts both a stereo line-level pair and an LFE feed, the Sub 600P can take a signal from an integrated amplifier or preamplifier that lacks a dedicated subwoofer output, or connect to the subwoofer output of a home cinema receiver or surround processor. Its extended upper response and the adjustable filter let it sit under compact stand-mount speakers that stop producing bass relatively high, as well as under larger floorstanders that want help just in the deepest bass. In a multichannel system the LFE input carries the .1 channel directly from the processor.

The Focal Cub Evo is the smaller subwoofer choice, with a 21 cm Polyflex woofer and a 200 W class D amplifier in a smaller bass-reflex cabinet.
