The Cub Evo is a compact active subwoofer from Focal, the French loudspeaker manufacturer. It was designed as the bass companion for the Sib Evo and Sib Evo Dolby Atmos satellite speakers, though Focal states that it can also be added to any other home cinema or multi-channel installation. The US list price is USD 599.

Key specs that matter

A single 21 cm (8.25 inch) woofer with a Polyflex cone is driven by a 200 W class D amplifier. Focal rates the frequency response at 35 Hz to 150 Hz within 3 dB, and output is 6 dB down at 30 Hz. The bass-reflex cabinet is made of MDF with a black finish and measures 305 mm high, 282 mm wide and 299 mm deep. Each unit weighs 8 kg. Connections are limited to a stereo pair of RCA line inputs plus a separate LFE socket, and the rear panel carries a level control, an adjustable low-pass crossover, a 0 or 180 degree phase switch and a power mode selector.

Engineering and use context

The reflex port has a streamlined profile, a shape intended to reduce air noise when the woofer moves a lot of air at high levels. Instead of sitting directly on the floor, the enclosure rests on an anti-vibration stand, which decouples the cabinet from the surface beneath it so less energy passes into floorboards. Class D amplification keeps heat and power draw low in a small box that has little space for heatsinks. In Autopower mode the unit powers up by itself when an input signal is detected and goes back to standby after a period of silence, with standby consumption of 0.5 W, while the On position keeps it running permanently. From the external dimensions, the gross cabinet volume works out at under 26 litres.

Pairing

The Sib Evo satellites it was built for use a 5 inch Polyflex woofer and a 3/4 inch soft dome tweeter, with 90 dB sensitivity and a lower limit of 70 Hz, so the Cub Evo takes over the range those small cabinets cannot reach. The Sib Evo Dolby Atmos version shares the forward drivers, reaches 65 Hz and adds a 4 inch full-range driver firing upward that covers 90 Hz to 20 kHz. With an AV receiver, the LFE socket receives the bass-managed subwoofer channel, while the stereo RCA pair lets it work with a two-channel amplifier or preamplifier that has line outputs, with the crossover setting the upper limit to meet the main speakers.
