The Studio 650P is a 10 inch powered subwoofer from the JBL Studio 6 home loudspeaker series. It is the smaller of the two Studio 6 subwoofers, with the Studio 660P above it. It comes in a Dark Wood finish with a magnetic grille, matching the Studio 6 floorstanding, bookshelf and centre speakers.

Key specs that matter

A 254 mm PolyPlas low-frequency woofer handles the bass. The built-in amplifier is rated at 250 W RMS and 500 W dynamic power. Frequency response runs from 28 Hz to 150 Hz. The low-pass crossover is variable between 50 Hz and 150 Hz with a slope of 24 dB per octave. Controls on the rear panel cover auto power, crossover frequency, level and phase, and the input is a single line-level LFE connection. The cabinet is ported, with a tuned vent firing downward. Power consumption is below 0.5 W in standby and 335 W at maximum, and the subwoofer is made in 120 V 60 Hz and 220-230 V 50/60 Hz versions. The cabinet measures 395 x 395 x 395 mm and weighs about 10.4 kg, and carpet spikes are supplied.

Engineering and use context

PolyPlas is JBL's polymer-coated cone material, applied here to a large cone that has to move significant air at low frequencies. The bass-reflex enclosure uses a tuned port to extend output into the deepest bass, and placing the port on the bottom panel keeps its opening out of sight and vents the air towards the floor. The steep crossover slope rolls off the subwoofer steeply above the selected frequency, so little upper-bass output overlaps with the main speakers. The wide variable range covers both small satellite speakers that need help from higher up and full-range floorstanders that need support only in the lowest octave. Adjusting phase brings the woofer's output into step with the main speakers when the cabinet sits closer to or farther from the seat than they do. With auto power engaged, the amplifier wakes on an incoming signal and sleeps again after a quiet spell, keeping standby consumption minimal. The cube-shaped cabinet fits into a corner or beside furniture, and the spikes couple it firmly to carpeted floors.

Pairing

The single LFE input takes the LFE or sub out signal from an AV receiver or a stereo amplifier with a dedicated sub out. Within the Studio 6 series it pairs with the floorstanding and bookshelf models in a home cinema system.

Alternatives

The JBL Studio 660P uses a 12 inch PolyPlas driver and a 500 W RMS amplifier in the same Studio 6 series.
