The S/850 is a powered subwoofer by REL Acoustics, one of four models in the Serie S line that the company relaunched on 23 September 2025 while marking 35 years in the subwoofer business. REL places it in the middle of the range, sitting between the S/550 and the two Black Label models. Its US price is USD 3,999. The company says the whole line was re-engineered from the ground up, covering drivers, amplifiers, cabinetry and wireless connectivity.

Key specs that matter

A 12-inch, or 305 mm, long-throw active driver with a CarbonAlloy cone structure sits in a die-cast alloy chassis, and a 12-inch passive radiator completes the driver set, its flat cone formed from carbon/carbon composite on a steel frame. The passive unit has 60 mm of travel in each direction. The Linear Class D amplifier produces 850 W RMS and can surge to 1,000 W on peaks. Low-frequency extension is rated at -6 dB at 19 Hz. Outer size is 488 mm across, 410 mm high and 540 mm front to back, for a weight of 42.5 kg, or 52 kg once boxed in a 670 x 590 x 660 mm carton.

Engineering and use context

For this generation REL replaced the solid aluminium centre cap of the active driver with a lightweight pure carbon-fibre cap. The power supply is a traditional design, and its input filters were upgraded with thin-film capacitors. Protection covers an electronic Set Safe circuit, DC fault protection and output short protection. The enclosure is offered in piano black lacquer or gloss white lacquer, each applied in eight coats, and a cloth grille is included, with a wood grille sold separately. Recessed stainless-steel handles have integrated hardware for line array stacking, and precision-milled knurled aluminium knobs adjust the stack. Connections include Neutrik Speakon high-level input and output, a pair of RCA inputs plus one LFE input on RCA and another on XLR. The unit accepts the REL AirShip Direct wireless module, which is bought separately.

Pairing

The Speakon high-level input picks up its signal from the amplifier terminals already driving the main stereo speakers, while the RCA and XLR LFE sockets take the bass channel of an AV receiver or cinema decoder.

The REL S/550 is the smaller Serie S model, pairing a 10-inch active driver with a 12-inch passive radiator and a 550 W amplifier in a 31 kg cabinet.
