The S/550 is the smallest of four powered REL Acoustics subwoofers in the reworked Serie S line launched on 23 September 2025, the year the company marked 35 years in the subwoofer business. REL targets rooms of about 23 to 46 m2 and describes the model as a reinvention of the earlier S/510 with greater scale. The US list price is USD 3,299.

Key specs that matter

REL fits a 10-inch, or 250 mm, long-throw active unit whose CarbonAlloy cone is carried by a die-cast alloy basket, working with a larger 12-inch, or 305 mm, passive radiator whose carbon/carbon cone is flat and mounted in a steel basket. The Linear Class D amplifier is rated at 550 W RMS, and REL states it can deliver 600 W without strain over long periods. Bass reach is specified as -6 dB at 19 Hz. Cabinet size is 445 x 372 x 500 mm (width, height, depth). It weighs 31 kg on its own, or 39 kg in a shipping carton of 24 x 22 x 24 inches.

Engineering and use context

REL says it re-engineered the whole Serie S range from the ground up, including drivers, amplifiers, cabinetry and wireless connectivity. The S/550 enclosure is lower, wider and deeper than before, with horizontal strakes cut into the side walls and revised internal bracing, and the larger volume gives the drivers more room to work. Front-rail levelling adjusters are fitted, and the analogue filter is the second-generation PerfectFilter circuit. In the S/550 the input filters use polypropylene capacitors, and protection is handled by fully electronic systems. Buyers choose black or white, both as a gloss lacquer built up in eight coats, and REL sells a wood grille as an optional extra. The cabinet is designed so that several units can be stacked in a line array arrangement. High-level connection uses Neutrik Speakon sockets for both input and output. On the low-level side REL provides two RCA inputs together with LFE sockets in RCA and XLR, with one RCA output and one LFE output on RCA or XLR for linking additional subwoofers. Wireless operation is possible with the REL AirShip Direct module, sold separately.

Pairing

Through the Speakon high-level input the S/550 takes its signal from the loudspeaker outputs of the main power amplifier, while an AV receiver's dedicated bass channel can be wired to the LFE sockets in either RCA or XLR form, so the same unit can handle both roles at once.

Alternatives

The REL S/850 is the next Serie S subwoofer up, with a 12-inch active driver, a 12-inch passive radiator and an 850 W amplifier in a 42.5 kg cabinet.
