The Power Sub 10 is an active subwoofer in the GLE family made by the Weilrod company Canton, positioned one size below the Power Sub 12 and above the Power Sub 8. Canton designed it to be used with any of its own hi-fi speakers while also supporting existing speakers from other makers. The German list price is EUR 699 per piece, and it is supplied in black or white matt decor with a magnetically attached fabric front cover whose corners are generously rounded.

Key specs that matter

A single 257 mm front-firing woofer with a titanium cone works together with a passive radiator of the same diameter mounted in the bottom panel and firing downward. Its onboard amp module delivers 200 W nominal, or 330 W music power. Canton quotes a frequency range of 22 to 200 Hz, with a crossover adjustable from 50 to 200 Hz. The cabinet measures 32 x 43.2 x 45.3 cm in width, height and depth, and the subwoofer weighs 16.2 kg without its carton. Standby consumption is 0.32 W.

Engineering and use context

Canton describes the design as a bass reflex system in which the downfiring passive cone, made from stiff MDF, takes the place of a conventional port. The active driver uses a multi-folded wave surround of the latest generation, which the maker says permits much longer excursion than a conventional surround and lowers distortion, and a double cone is part of the specification. A Bass Guide feature is listed for the bottom-firing radiator. Signal processing is digital. SC technology inside the amplifier module guards the subwoofer against damage at high levels and keeps distortion low. A room compensation circuit offers three switchable settings for the low-frequency output, which makes the Power Sub 10 less critical about where it stands. Volume, phase and crossover frequency are all adjustable, and automatic switching powers the module up once music reaches its inputs. The feet are height-adjustable and the cabinet is prepared for spikes or absorbers.

Pairing

A pair of RCA line inputs accepts the LFE feed from a surround receiver or the pre-out of a stereo preamp, and a line-level out socket passes the signal on to further gear. Where an amplifier has no sub output, two high-level inputs accept ordinary loudspeaker cable, and the terminals accept banana plugs. The package contains the subwoofer, fabric cover, power cord and manual. Canton offers it for both stereo and home cinema systems.
