The Mini T Sub is a powered subwoofer from Bryston of Peterborough, Ontario, built as the bass companion to the Mini T loudspeakers and sold as the smaller of the two subwoofers in the Model T family. It shares cabinet width, depth and electronics with the Model T Sub but carries one fewer driver and stands shorter.
Key specs that matter
Two 8-inch woofers are mounted vertically in the cabinet and driven by a 600 W class D amplifier. Bryston quotes a response of 25 Hz to 150 Hz within 3 dB and a dynamic range of 108 dB at 1 m under anechoic conditions. The enclosure is 267 mm wide, 610 mm tall and 424 mm deep, and the weight is 40.4 kg. Standard finishes are Walnut, Boston Cherry and Black Ash, with other veneers available on request.
Engineering and use context
Rather than drawing on a switching supply, the class D output stage is fed by a linear power supply. A DSP engine handles the processing inside the amplifier plate. Five low-pass settings are offered - 40, 60, 80, 100 and 150 Hz, the phase switch offers 0 and 180 degree positions, and a level control sets output. A subsonic switch inserts a 20 Hz cut-off, which Bryston suggests using with turntables to keep rumble and record warp out of the woofers. A 12 V trigger input on a 3.5 mm jack lets a receiver or processor wake the sub, and a trigger output passes the signal on to a second unit. When the trigger is off, the LED turns from green to red and the amplifier drops into a low consumption standby mode. Mains power enters through a three-wire socket at the bottom of the control panel next to the main power switch. The supply is set at the factory for 115 V or 230 V, and a technician can convert it by changing the fuse and an internal cable. The cabinet ships on large non-marring feet, with spike feet included in the box, and both types are height adjustable for levelling.
Pairing
Three input types are available - RCA line, balanced XLR line with a matching output, and speaker-level binding posts - and only one type should be used at a time. The XLR pair suits balanced preamplifiers and AV processors, while the binding posts allow connection to an integrated or stereo power amplifier lacking a line-level sub out. A chassis ground screw can be removed if a 50 or 60 Hz hum from a ground loop appears.
Alternatives
The Bryston Model T Sub is the taller sibling, using three 8-inch woofers with the same amplifier and deeper bass extension.
