The KH 810 II is a DSP-controlled active subwoofer from the studio monitor maker Neumann, intended as the bass extension for the mid-size monitors of the KH line. It sits in a family of three second-generation subwoofers between the KH 805 II and the twin-driver KH 870 II, and Neumann states that it offers twice the output of the older KH 750 DSP. Launch prices were USD 3,699, GBP 3,333 and EUR 3,869, and a KH 810 II AES67 version adds audio-over-IP networking.

Key specs that matter

A 10-inch (265 mm) long-throw woofer with Extremely Linear Force Factor (ELFF) motor technology is driven by a 180 W amplifier. Free-field response is 18 to 310 Hz within 3 dB and 16 to 750 Hz within 6 dB, with ripple of 1.5 dB between 20 and 295 Hz. Maximum level at 1 m and 3% THD averaged from 50 to 100 Hz is 109 dB on the floor, 112 dB against a wall and 115 dB in a corner, and self-noise stays below 20 dB(A) at 10 cm. The cabinet measures 368 x 330 x 645 mm (H x W x D), has an external volume of 78 litres and weighs 25.5 kg.

Engineering and use context

The enclosure is ultra-stiff wood with an aluminium electronics panel, a bass reflex design with front-facing ports and rubber isolation feet. The front is metallic anthracite RAL 7021 and the rear black RAL 9005. Internal processing runs at 32-bit audio resolution with 64-bit double-precision maths, and the built-in crossover works at 80 Hz with a 24 dB per octave slope. The bass manager handles stereo, surround and 3D layouts of up to 7.1.4 channels, and FIR phase linearisation can be applied to connected analogue speakers. Excursion, soft clip and thermal limiters protect the woofer, amplifier and voice coil. The universal switched-mode supply takes 100 to 240 V, idles at about 35 W and goes to standby below 300 mW after 20 minutes. An illuminated logo shows white in normal use, rose for identification and red for protection or faults, and a ground lift helps break ground loops.

Pairing

Two electronically balanced XLR inputs and outputs handle a stereo pair of monitors. For multichannel work two Sub-D 25 connectors accept up to 12 analogue input channels and two more feed up to 11 output channels, while BNC digital connections serve 11 monitor channels plus a daisy-chain link for several subwoofers. Input impedance exceeds 12 kOhm and the Ethernet port connects the unit to Neumann control software.

Alternatives

The Neumann KH 805 II is the lower-priced model in this second-generation subwoofer family, likewise built around a single 10-inch ELFF driver.
