The KH 805 II is an active studio subwoofer from Neumann, part of a range introduced together with the KH 810 II and KH 870 II. It is the stereo model of the three and is meant to extend the low end of Neumann KH Line monitors such as the KH 150 and KH 310. Neumann states that it delivers almost twice the output and low-frequency headroom of its predecessor, the KH 750 DSP. Launch prices were USD 2,799, GBP 2,499 and EUR 2,879.
Key specs that matter
A 10-inch (265 mm) long-throw driver with an ELFF motor, short for Extremely Linear Force Factor, is powered by a 222 W amplifier. Response is listed as 18 Hz to 310 Hz within 3 dB, with low-frequency reach down to 16 Hz, and maximum level at 1 m reaches 110 dB SPL in half space, 113 dB against a wall and 116 dB in a corner, with 95 dB available as a sine wave below 0.5% THD. Self-noise stays below 20 dB(A) at 0.1 m. Two balanced XLR analogue inputs and balanced XLR outputs are joined by an AES3 and S/PDIF digital input and output on a 75 ohm BNC socket that accepts 24-bit, 192 kHz signals, plus an RJ45 network port. Height is 368 mm, width 330 mm and depth 645 mm, and the unit weighs 25.5 kg.
Engineering and use context
Neumann builds the wooden enclosure with Low Resonance Integral Molding materials, finishes it in metallic anthracite paint (RAL 7021), fits a protective grille and rubber isolation feet, and vents it through front-facing reflex ports designed for low port noise. Signal processing runs at 32-bit resolution, and intelligent protection limiters keep distortion low at maximum level. The built-in bass manager offers several routing modes - 2.0 and 0.1 stereo management with a fixed 80 Hz fourth-order crossover at 24 dB per octave that can be bypassed, operation with external bass management, LFE playback up to 120 Hz and full-range LFE - so the same unit works in stereo, surround and 3D audio systems. Rear controls cover input gain from +2 to -12 dB, phase in 45-degree steps from 0 to 180 degrees, a 30 Hz low cut and a ground lift switch. Auto Standby is included. Integration with the monitors can be automated with Neumann MA 1 Automatic Monitor Alignment, sold separately. Neumann positions the model for medium-sized rooms.
Pairing
The main monitors connect through the subwoofer's XLR outputs, so the bass manager can take the lowest octaves away from them. A digital source can enter through the BNC input and pass on to digital monitors in the KH Line.
Alternatives
The Neumann KH 810 II is the multichannel-format subwoofer of this generation, using one driver of the same size and multichannel D-Sub inputs and outputs.
