The J10 SUB is a powered subwoofer from Jamo, the smaller of the two J series models. Jamo aims it at both home theatre and music playback, and its MDF cabinet wears a wood grain vinyl wrap chosen to match the Jamo Studio loudspeaker line. The current catalogue lists it in Black Ash, and White Ash and Dark Apple versions were offered earlier.

Key specs that matter

Jamo fits a 250 mm long stroke unit with an aluminised polyfiber cone, mounted on the front of a bass reflex box whose port exits at the rear. An all-digital Class D amplifier is rated at 150 W, with 300 W quoted as the maximum. The plus or minus 3 dB bandwidth runs from 31 Hz to 120 Hz, and the -6 dB cut-off lies at 27 Hz. The cabinet measures 368.3 mm high, 317.5 mm wide and 427 mm deep. Net weight is 12.5 kg, rising to 15 kg with packaging. Standby consumption stays below 0.5 W, and the unit runs on 100 to 120 V at 60 Hz or 220 to 240 V at 50 Hz. A grille and power cord come in the box.

Engineering and use context

Jamo presents the aluminised polyfiber cone as a way to reach low frequencies with minimal distortion. The digital amplifier is chosen for efficiency, and the maker describes it as keeping headroom in reserve. Six elements share the rear plate - mains inlet, level knob, crossover dial, a three-position power switch, phase selector and line inputs. The power switch offers ON, OFF and AUTO, and in the ON/AUTO setting the J10 wakes automatically once an input is detected and drops into standby after 15 to 20 minutes of silence. A front-mounted LED glows blue during operation with an incoming signal and goes dark when the amplifier is off. The low-pass knob is marked at 40 Hz, 80 Hz and 120 Hz and ends in a position marked LFE.

Pairing

Two RCA jacks, L/LFE and R, take either a single cable from the sub output of a surround receiver or left and right preamplifier outputs from a stereo amplifier. When the receiver sets the crossover, the manual advises turning the subwoofer control to its highest point. Where the setting is made on the subwoofer itself, it proposes 50 to 90 Hz for large floorstanding main speakers and 90 to 150 Hz for small bookshelf or satellite models. Jamo says to keep the phase position, 0 or 180 degrees, that yields more bass at the listening seat, and the volume is raised until the subwoofer level matches the main speakers.

Alternatives

The Jamo J12 SUB, the larger J series model, moves the J line up to a 12 inch driver.
