The Cube Subwoofer is a compact powered bass unit from the Danish brand Jamo, built around a near-perfect cube cabinet that measures roughly a quarter of a metre on each side. Instead of relying on one large cone, Jamo fits two small long-stroke woofers and a Class D amplifier into this box, so it can sit beside a sofa, under a sideboard or next to a TV bench. The brand sells it in four colours - black, grey, white and khaki green.

Key specs that matter

Two 165 mm (6.5 inch) long-stroke woofers handle the low end. Its Class D amplification carries a 250 W rating, and Jamo lists 500 W as the maximum. Jamo quotes a bandwidth of 40 Hz to 200 Hz within +/-3 dB and a -6 dB low-frequency cut-off at 36 Hz. The cabinet is 253 mm high, 255 mm wide and 240 mm deep, and the unit weighs 8.55 kg. It accepts AC mains at 100-120 V and 60 Hz or at 220-240 V and 50 Hz, depending on the regional version.

Engineering and use context

Each woofer uses an anodised aluminium cone mounted in an iron basket and driven by a ferrite magnet system, and the cones fire out of the sides of the cabinet. Jamo calls this a dual active driver layout, and the voice coils are oversized aluminium windings chosen to shed heat during long stretches of high output. Using two smaller drivers rather than a single larger one gives more total cone area while keeping the box small enough for apartments and media rooms. Three progressive adjustments are provided. The low-pass filter sweeps between 50 Hz and 150 Hz, the phase control turns from 0 to 180 degrees, and a bass EQ adds between 0 and 6 dB of lift centred on 45 Hz. Because the drivers radiate sideways, the Cube does not need a clear front path and can be placed with its front close to furniture.

Pairing

Input is via two RCA connectors, which suits the LFE or subwoofer pre-out of an AV receiver as well as the sub output found on many stereo integrated amplifiers and streaming amplifiers. With stereo gear that has left and right pre-outs, both sockets can be used. Its filter can be set high enough to fill in below small bookshelf models or satellites that roll off early, while the lower settings suit floorstanding towers that already reach down on their own. In a surround system the receiver's bass management usually takes over the crossover job, and the sub's own filter can then be set to its highest point.

Alternatives

Jamo's Sub 210 is a single-driver alternative that uses one down-firing 200 mm woofer in a slightly larger bass reflex box.
