GAIA from the Australian maker Kyron Audio is not a standalone subwoofer but a complete active home music system. It is supplied as a turnkey package with loudspeakers, amplifiers, control unit and cables, and Kyron delivers and installs it. Each channel pairs a boxless main loudspeaker with a special Gaia edition of the Mercury subwoofer, so a stereo system includes two subwoofers.

Key specs that matter

Each main speaker carries six 12-inch long-throw dipole woofers, two 7-inch low-distortion midwoofers with the patented SD-3 symmetrical drive motor and two 1-inch ring dome tweeters with the SD-2 motor and a proprietary waveguide. The subwoofer uses one 12-inch ultra long-throw driver with an aluminium cone and copper inductance control, driven by a 2500 W amplifier with 96 kHz low-latency processing. The subwoofer section works only at extremely low frequencies. Each speaker is fed by four Halcro Lyrus amplifier modules rated at 500 W peak each, configured as four dual mono amplifiers.

Engineering and use context

The Gaia goes further than an open-baffle design and removes the baffle that normally holds the front of the drivers, so there is no enclosure and no resonant chamber, a design Kyron calls no-baffle technology. The control unit has a touch screen and remote control and uses DEQX processing with linear-phase FIR crossovers, anechoic FIR frequency correction and group delay correction. Its rear panel takes analogue signals on a single XLR or a single RCA socket, while digital sources can use AES/EBU, coaxial S/PDIF in RCA or BNC form, an optical Toslink port and asynchronous USB. The speakers connect through a CA-COM bayonet connector with silver-plated contacts, and the subwoofers take a balanced XLR feed. Two Kyron amplifier units are supplied, and inside each machined enclosure every Halcro module has its own power supply and a shielded section, with a separately regulated proprietary buffer stage. The Gaia edition Mercury gets stainless steel legs for added rigidity and to match the main speakers. Kyron positions the system for lofts, open plan living and dedicated music rooms.

Pairing

As a complete system Gaia needs only a source. Kyron's own Pythos network player, which feeds a DAC over USB, fits the asynchronous USB input. Finishes can be customised with Italian leather, gold or silver highlights and custom paint.

Alternatives

For smaller rooms Kyron offers the Kronos system, which uses two 12-inch dipole woofers per speaker and six Halcro amplifier channels per side.
