The Epoque Aeon Baforce Petite (Active) is the self-powered version of the smaller array subwoofer in the Epoque Aeon family, a German-made range from Göbel High End. It is a scaled-down relative of the full-height Epoque Aeon Baforce, and Göbel also sells a passive version for owners who prefer their own amplification. Both share the same drivers and cabinet, with the active model carrying its amplifiers inside.
Key specs that matter
Eight custom Göbel Aeon 9-inch long-throw bass drivers with aluminium cones are fitted, and together they give more than 1,800 cm2 of radiating area with a linear excursion above 2 cm. Göbel rates the frequency range at 15 Hz to 80 Hz. In the active version each driver has its own 250 W amplifier, specified at 1% THD, for a total of 2,000 W. The base plate measures 52.5 cm wide by 65.5 cm deep and the total height is 119 cm. The active unit weighs 210 kg unpacked and 250 kg in its flight case, while the passive version is a 4 ohm load weighing 190 kg. Finishes are white piano lacquer with natural silver anodised aluminium, or black piano lacquer with dark space grey anodised aluminium, and other finishes cost extra.
Engineering and use context
The drivers sit on the left and right sides of the enclosure in a symmetrical array, so their mechanical forces are impulse compensated, and every driver has its own sealed chamber. The amplifiers are adapted Class H designs coupled directly to their drivers, and the low impedance at their outputs keeps the damping factor high. Göbel oversizes the power supply so that its peak current capability is fourfold what the amplifier stages draw at maximum, and the supply sits in its own shielded chamber away from the analogue section and is watched constantly by a microcontroller. The enclosure is a sandwich of multilayer composite materials and an aluminium alloy, with parts milled from solid aluminium blocks for resonance control, EMI shielding and heat dispersion. The feet come in anodised aluminium or composite with stainless steel top and bottom plates, and the active version has heat dispersion slots in them.
Pairing
Filtering is not done inside the cabinet. Göbel uses the separate Epoque Aeon Baforce Controller, a fully analogue active crossover kept in its own case so that small signals stay away from the amplifier currents and magnetic fields. That controller sits between the preamplifier and the subwoofer, while the main speakers keep their own amplification.
Alternatives
The Göbel Epoque Aeon Baforce is the full-size model with sixteen 9-inch drivers, a 216 cm tall cabinet and 16 x 250 W in its active form.
