The Descend DN12 is a powered subwoofer from Definitive Technology, launched on 13 July 2021 as the second largest model of the Descend series. Together with the DN15 it forms the upper pair of the range, which adds digital processing, a remote with display and trigger control to the basic Descend layout. It comes in Midnight Black, with Glacier White offered as an option.

Key specs that matter

A 12 inch long-throw woofer works with two 12 inch passive radiators in the 3XR configuration. The amplifier is a custom Class H sliding rail unit, rated at 500 W continuous and 1,500 W peak, and processing is handled by a 56-bit DSP. Response is specified as 25 Hz to 150 Hz within 3 dB, and the adjustable crossover spans 40 Hz to 140 Hz. The enclosure measures about 47.5 x 45.8 x 48.5 cm (height, width, depth) and weighs close to 33 kg. The rear panel offers an LFE connection plus a left and right RCA line input pair.

Engineering and use context

With 3XR, the company uses the sealed air volume to drive both radiators from the single active cone, and it claims triple the radiating area of a vented design in the same size of cabinet. There is no port, so the design avoids port noise, and the cabinet is described as non-resonant. Intelligent Phase Control provides a continuous 360 degree phase adjustment instead of a 0 or 180 degree toggle. Three EQ presets, Flat, Deep and Loud, are selectable, and a slim remote with its own display gives access to level and settings from the listening seat, while an LED readout on the front panel confirms each change. Trigger control at 12 V and a pass-through for infrared commands allow integration with automation systems and AV receivers. Drivers and cabinet carry a 5 year warranty, amplification and electronics 3 years.

Pairing

AV receivers and surround processors connect through the LFE socket, and the RCA pair accepts the line output of a stereo preamp or integrated model. With the trigger link, the DN12 powers up whenever the receiver does. In a 20 m2 home cinema one DN12 can support a full set of floorstanding or bookshelf speakers, and two units can be placed where the room layout calls for a pair.

Alternatives

The Descend DN15 is the bigger Descend model, using a 15 inch woofer with two 15 inch passive radiators and reaching down to 20 Hz.
