The Descend DN10 is a Definitive Technology powered subwoofer, introduced on 13 July 2021 as part of the four-model Descend series. It sits between the DN8 and the DN12 and uses the simpler control set of the two smaller models, without the remote and display of the larger pair. It was listed at USD 899 in a Midnight Black finish. The DN8 and DN10 share one amplifier platform, while the DN12 and DN15 use a different one, so the DN10 is the bigger of the two models with the simpler electronics.

Key specs that matter

One active 10 inch paper cone woofer is paired with two 10 inch passive radiators. The amplifier is a Class D design rated at 200 W continuous and 500 W peak. The quoted response runs from 28 Hz to 200 Hz at the 3 dB points. The cabinet measures about 42.5 x 40.7 x 43.3 cm high, wide and deep, and it weighs roughly 21 kg. Inputs cover stereo line level RCA, a dedicated LFE connection and speaker level.

Engineering and use context

Under the 3XR name, Definitive Technology links both radiators to the air pressure inside the box, so they move in response to the driven cone. According to the company the arrangement triples the moving surface compared with a ported box of equal volume, and because there is no port the enclosure avoids chuffing noise. The non-resonant cabinet is built as a closed box apart from the radiators. Controls on the amplifier panel set output level, the low pass filter and phase with a 0 or 180 degree choice. A power switch selects automatic signal sensing or a DC trigger mode for powering the unit up in step with other components. Warranty cover is 5 years on drivers and cabinet and 3 years on the amplifier and electronics.

Pairing

The LFE input suits any AV receiver with a subwoofer output, while the speaker level input lets the DN10 join a stereo amplifier that has no pre-out, since it connects in parallel at the main speaker terminals. In a 20 m2 room the DN10 can support compact bookshelf or satellite speakers in a film or music system, and the low pass control is then set to meet the roll-off of those speakers. Both the phase switch and the filter sit on the rear panel, so the subwoofer should be placed where that panel remains reachable during setup of the system.

Alternatives

The Descend DN12 steps up in the same range, pairing a 12 inch woofer and two 12 inch passive radiators with a Class H amplifier and 56-bit DSP.
