The B112v2 is the 12-inch sealed subwoofer of the Revel Performa3 range, made under the Harman International umbrella. As the v2 designation indicates, it succeeds the earlier B112 and was introduced alongside the 10-inch B110v2, which uses an identical rear panel and amplifier. Finish choices are black, white and walnut, all in high gloss, and Revel states that the finishing process was developed and supervised by Italian cabinet makers.

Key specs that matter

Amplifier output is 1,000 W RMS, with 2,000 W available as a peak figure. Revel lists the normal-mode bass limits as 29.5 Hz at -3 dB, 27 Hz at -6 dB and 24 Hz at -10 dB, and in extended mode as 29 Hz, 26 Hz and 23 Hz respectively. The adjustable low-pass crossover covers 50 to 150 Hz and can be switched to an LFE bypass. For full output the amplifier needs 400 mV at the input. Connections are balanced XLR at 20 kOhm and unbalanced RCA at 14 kOhm, and the XLR input is wired pin 2 hot. Height is 468 mm, width 404 mm and depth 420 mm including grille, and weight is 29.4 kg.

Engineering and use context

Revel developed a new coated cellulose driver for this pair of subwoofers with high output at low distortion as the target. Motor geometry was optimized with Klippel methods so that voice coil, spider and surround move linearly together. The coil is 50 mm long, made of two copper layers on a fiberglass former that tolerates heat, and gives a large Xmax. A high-temperature Nomex spider with progressive rolls and an oversized SBR rubber surround handle long strokes. The magnet assembly weighs 8.7 kg and stacks two ceramic 5 magnets with a flared vent, and a thick shorting ring keeps inductance more linear. Cooling vents in the back plate raise power handling and cut compression. Compared with the original B112, linear excursion increases by 82 percent. The cast aluminum frame is fully vented and helps pull heat from the voice coil. Selecting extended mode lowers the maximum volume the sub can reach.

Pairing

Input levels run from 0 dBV nominal up to +12 dBV maximum unbalanced or +18 dBV balanced, so the B112v2 works from a stereo preamplifier as well as from the subwoofer jack of a home cinema processor. With a stereo source, Y-splitters send the left and right line signals to both the sub and the main amplifier. A phase switch, gain control and signal-sensing standby after ten minutes help integration, and the 12 V trigger output passes the switch-on signal to further Performa3 v2 units.

Alternatives

For a smaller cabinet the Revel B110v2 keeps the same amplifier with a 10-inch driver, measuring 428 x 364 x 342 mm with less bass extension.
