The SR58 is a three-way vented floorstanding loudspeaker in the Audiant line of Perreaux, the amplifier maker based in New Zealand. It stands 1210 mm tall and weighs 104 kg per speaker, a mass that comes from a cabinet of high-density MDF bonded to slabs of solid natural stone on each side.

Key specs that matter

Five front-facing drivers sit in each cabinet. Two 8-inch aluminium cone woofers in a reflex load cover the range up to 650 Hz, midrange drivers flank the tweeter in an MTM layout, and the tweeter uses a Sonomex fabric dome, with the upper crossover at 2950 Hz. Response is 33 Hz to above 20 kHz within plus or minus 2.5 dB and 27 Hz to 20 kHz within plus or minus 6 dB. Nominal impedance is 4 ohm with a minimum of 3 ohm. Perreaux recommends amplifiers of up to 700 W, equal to 350 W into 8 ohm. The footprint is 280 mm wide and 460 mm deep, and the packed weight per speaker is 152 kg.

Engineering and use context

Perreaux calls the build method rigid stratification. The MDF shell is up to 25 mm thick and heavily braced, and stone slabs are bonded to the sides to lower cabinet resonance. The low section uses a second-order Linkwitz-Riley filter, while the transition from midrange to tweeter uses a third-order Butterworth filter. The speaker has no passive radiators, and larger drivers were chosen to extend low-frequency output instead. A demonstration pair was clad in 20 mm of Nero Marquina marble, and Perreaux notes that the inner cabinets can be built to suit a customer's requirements. Because of its weight, the SR58 needs no spikes and is supplied with levelling bolts instead. Separate terminals for the woofer, midrange and tweeter sections allow single wiring with one pair of cables, bi-wiring or tri-wiring, and each section can be fed by its own amplifier. Buyers can choose among many stone claddings, and the inner cabinet is offered in NZ Rimu, mahogany or painted finishes, with wood veneers, high gloss black or white and custom RAL colours also listed. The UK price is GBP 7,850.

Pairing

A minimum impedance of 3 ohm asks for amplification comfortable with loads this low. Perreaux itself has shown the speaker with two of its Prisma series 750 W mono blocks, and the tri-wire terminals leave room for a multi-amplifier setup. The size of the towers suits rooms well beyond 20 m2.
