The Speaker Box 10 E Carbon is a slim floorstanding loudspeaker from Pro-Ject Audio Systems and one of two tower models in the current E Carbon generation, which also includes the Speaker Box 3 E Carbon and Speaker Box 5 E Carbon standmount designs. The matte lacquered versions in black or white were priced at EUR 799, while the walnut veneer version was listed at EUR 850.

Upper frequencies are reproduced by a 2.5 cm silk dome, joined by two 10 cm low-mid drivers with glass fibre and carbon composite cones. Pro-Ject specifies a frequency range of 48 Hz to 20 kHz and a nominal impedance of 4 ohms, with sensitivity rated at 87 dB for 1 W at 1 m. The recommended amplifier power runs from 10 to 150 watts per channel. Each cabinet measures 935 mm tall, 140 mm wide and 190 mm deep and weighs 7.93 kg. Three finishes are offered, namely satin black, satin white and real walnut veneer.

Engineering and use context

The design is arranged as a 2.5-way system, in which both woofers handle bass while only one of them extends upward to meet the tweeter. The division between the drivers is handled by a discrete crossover built from individual components, which Pro-Ject designed for a flat frequency response. The enclosure is built from MDF, specified by Pro-Ject as rigid and resonance free, and it operates on the bass reflex principle with the port placed on the rear panel. The front baffle has no visible screws, and the black grilles supplied in the box are held in place by magnets, so the cabinet front stays clean with or without the covers fitted. Each speaker is wired via a single pair of gold plated banana sockets at the rear. The narrow cabinet keeps the visual footprint close to that of a standmount speaker on a stand, while the tower height puts the tweeter up at listening level without extra furniture.

Pairing

The low nominal load means that the sensible match is an amp rated by its maker for such loads, and the 10 W floor of the recommended range shows that modest integrated amplifiers can drive the pair. Pro-Ject's own compact electronics such as the MaiA DS3 fall within the stated power range, and the E Carbon bookshelf models can serve as surround or second-room speakers in the same finish.
