The SourcePoint 888 is a floorstanding loudspeaker from MoFi Electronics, designed by Andrew Jones as a descendant of his SourcePoint 8 and SourcePoint 10 stand-mount models. Jones built his career at Pioneer, KEF, Infinity and ELAC before his work for MoFi. MoFi describes it as a 3-way design built from the ground up, combining the refined concentric driver of the earlier SourcePoint models with two newly developed 8-inch woofers. It is sold in pairs.
Key specs that matter
Four drive units in each cabinet cover three frequency bands - two 8-inch paper-cone woofers, and an 8-inch paper-cone midrange with a 1.25-inch wide-roll soft-dome tweeter placed concentrically in the middle of that cone. The crossover hands over at 130 Hz and 1.6 kHz. MoFi rates the frequency range as 32 Hz to 30 kHz. Nominal impedance is 6 ohms and sensitivity is 87 dB for 2.83 V at 1 m. Each speaker measures 1070 mm high, 320 mm wide and 410 mm deep without its grille, or 425 mm deep once the grille is attached. The weight per speaker is 43 kg.
Engineering and use context
MoFi uses a vented box enclosure, with two ports on the rear panel. It is assembled from thick MDF panels with internal bracing, and the front baffle is sculpted with several facets meant to cut diffraction at the driver edges and to even out the frequency response. Housing the tweeter inside the midrange cone means that the midrange and high frequencies originate from the same physical space, the idea behind the concentric layout used throughout the SourcePoint series. The baffle is painted in satin black, while the rest of the cabinet wears a real wood veneer, available in Satin Walnut, Satin Black Ash and Satin White Ash. Each speaker has binding posts that accept both spade lugs and banana plugs, so either common type of cable termination fits. MoFi supplies spikes for use on carpet together with flat isolation feet for hard floors, and a separate SourcePoint 888 grille cover is also sold individually as a replacement part.
Pairing
The partnering amplifier has to work into a load that dips to a minimum of 4.5 ohms, and MoFi sets the maximum power input at 200 W, which marks the ceiling for amplifier output.
Alternatives
The SourcePoint V10 Master Edition is the other MoFi floorstander by Andrew Jones, combining a concentric 10-inch midrange and tweeter unit with twin 10-inch woofers, dual rear passive radiators and a rated 91 dB sensitivity.
