The Savoy Signature SE is a reference-grade floorstanding loudspeaker built by EgglestonWorks in Memphis, USA, and several rooms at Wisseloord Studios in the Netherlands use it as a monitor. The SE mark, short for Special Edition, was introduced with a new paint finishing system that gives an automotive-grade shine, together with better crossover components, upgraded internal wiring and improved binding posts.
Key specs that matter
EgglestonWorks specifies a frequency response of 18 Hz to 24,000 Hz at the -3 dB points and a sensitivity of 87 dB at 1 m with 2.83 V. Nominal impedance is 8 ohm, with a minimum of 5.4 ohm. The cabinet is about 38 cm wide, 61 cm deep and 150 cm tall, and each speaker weighs roughly 170 kg. Each cabinet carries two sets of rhodium terminals.
Engineering and use context
Driver count is high for a speaker of this height. A 1 inch fabric dome tweeter sits with two 6 inch midrange drivers using custom carbon fibre cones and 3 inch voice coils. Below them, two 6 inch mid-bass drivers work in isobaric, compound loading, and the low end comes from four 12 inch woofers arranged as two stacked pairs in push-push compound loading. Isobaric loading places one driver behind another so that the pair acts on a smaller enclosure volume. The cabinet walls are between 39 and 45 mm thick and they are backed by complex internal bracing and aluminium reinforcement up to 76 mm thick. Driver mounts and baffle sections carry anodised aluminium plating to reduce unwanted cabinet resonances. With this much mass and bass output, the Savoy suits large rooms and studio control rooms rather than small spaces. EgglestonWorks positions the design for musicians, producers and mastering engineers as well as home listeners.
Pairing
The moderate sensitivity combined with a load that falls to just above 5 ohm points to powerful solid-state amplification with high current capacity. Thanks to the doubled terminals, the woofer array and the upper drivers can receive separate cable runs or separate amplifier channels, spreading the heavy low-frequency demand away from the channel feeding the tweeter and midrange.
Alternatives
The EgglestonWorks Ivy Signature SE is the brand's larger reference floorstander, using six woofers and three midrange drivers per cabinet.
