The Emma EVOlution is the smallest floorstanding loudspeaker made by EgglestonWorks of Memphis, Tennessee, and is the entry floorstander of the company's Artisan EVO series. It came out of a research and development programme aimed at a more affordable range, and it shares the cabinet advances used in the larger models of the line. A pair was priced at USD 5,495 in the United States and AUD 14,990 in Australia, and the maker gives a warranty of six years on parts and labour for every pair.

Key specs that matter

EgglestonWorks lists a frequency response of 30 Hz to 24,000 Hz, a sensitivity of 88 dB and a nominal impedance of 6 ohm. Each speaker is about 19 cm wide, 41 cm deep and 109 cm tall, and weighs about 31 kg. Some official data gives the lower limit as 32 Hz at -3 dB, and one US specification lists the range as 32 Hz to 20,000 Hz. Configuration is two-way, with one tweeter and two woofers, fed through a single set of binding posts.

Engineering and use context

The two 6 inch woofer and midrange drivers use carbon cones and were built by Morel to EgglestonWorks specifications, and the top octaves come from a custom 1 inch fabric dome tweeter. The crossover uses a fourth-order Linkwitz-Riley alignment, and the network was redesigned for this generation together with the internal bracing and the porting. The enclosure has a double wall made of MDF and HDF layers, with all wood parts cut on a CNC router. Bass loading comes from a horizontal vent on the back panel measuring about 44 by 152 mm, so placement fully against the rear wall is best avoided. The narrow front and modest footprint suit living rooms of around 20 m2. Higher in the range sit models such as the Kiva, listed at USD 14,995 per pair, and the Viginti at USD 39,995. Only one pair of Cardas terminals is fitted, which rules out split-cable or dual-amplifier connection. The finish is built from several coats of automotive lacquer polished to a high gloss, and custom colours are offered on request directly from the factory, with Imola Red listed as a USD 500 option.

Pairing

The moderate nominal load and mid-level sensitivity call for transistor amplification with sensible current reserves, and a low-power valve amplifier is a poor fit. A single run of quality speaker cable per side is all the connection panel accepts, which keeps the setup simple.

Alternatives

The EgglestonWorks Oso is another floorstander from the brand with a compact cabinet.
