The Saranna is an active three-way floorstanding speaker from the Norwegian company Sigberg Audio, built around directivity control, with a cardioid pattern through the bass and midrange. Amplification, DSP and inputs are all inside the cabinet, so a pair requires nothing beyond a source and power from the wall. Sigberg sells it directly with worldwide shipping included, a 60-day trial and a 5-year warranty, at NOK 270,000 per pair.
Key specs that matter
On the front baffle sits a coaxial driver that pairs an 8-inch midbass and midrange cone with a polymer compression driver using a radial phase plug. Two further 8-inch bass units are mounted on the back, each capable of 24 mm of linear peak-to-peak excursion. A three-channel Hypex nCore class D amplifier supplies 600 W per speaker. The anechoic response is given as 28 to 20,000 Hz within 2.5 dB, with 20 Hz typical in a room, and the maximum level is 116 dB at 1 m per speaker with CTA-2034-A weighted pink noise. Distortion stays under 1 percent at 96 dB at 1 m above 100 Hz. The cabinet is 284 mm wide, 1100 mm high and 340 mm deep, reaching 114 cm with its base and feet, and weighs 44 kg.
Engineering and use context
Because the woofers face backwards and are combined with the front output in DSP, the speaker radiates less energy to the rear. Sigberg quotes 10 to 12 dB of attenuation between 130 Hz and 1 kHz and 12 to 16 dB from 1 to 5 kHz. The coaxial front unit places the compression driver in the centre of the cone, so the upper range comes from a single point. Analogue connections are RCA and balanced XLR, with an XLR through output, and digital connections are optical, coaxial S/PDIF with through and AES with through. Latency is under 1 ms from the analogue inputs and under 2 ms from digital. The unit detects a signal automatically and draws under 1.5 W in standby. A nine-band parametric equaliser can be set in software, and factory presets offer flat, 1.5 dB and 3 dB bass tilt. The core is painted in satin, with side panels of Italian wood veneer from Alpi designed by Piero Lissoni - Fade to Black uses black veneer, Shady White a grey one.
Pairing
The package includes mains cables for EU, UK and US sockets, a USB cable, magnetic grilles, the base and viscoelastic damping feet. The through connections allow one signal to be looped from the first speaker to the second, so a streamer or preamplifier with one digital or balanced output is enough. Sigberg also offers the Manta, SBS and Inkognito bass products for its speaker systems.
Alternatives
The Sigberg Audio SBS Gen 2 is the smaller active full-range system in the range.
