The Q950 is a passive 2.5-way bass reflex floorstanding loudspeaker from KEF from its Q Series, meant for stereo listening and for film soundtracks in a multichannel system. It sits above the Q750 in the same range, and KEF has since replaced it with the Q11 Meta three-way model. Buyers choose between Satin Black and Satin White, and full-length magnetic grilles are offered as an option. KEF sells it by the pair.

Key specs that matter

Every cabinet is built around a 200 mm aluminium Uni-Q array for midrange and treble, with a 38 mm vented aluminium dome at its centre. Below it sit a 200 mm aluminium long-throw bass driver and two further 200 mm aluminium auxiliary bass radiators, or ABRs. The single crossover point is at 2.2 kHz. KEF quotes a response of 44 Hz to 28 kHz within 3 dB, extending to 38 Hz at the -6 dB point, with a sensitivity of 91 dB at 2.83 V and 1 m and a maximum output of 113 dB. Nominal impedance is 8 ohms with a minimum of 3.2 ohms, and KEF recommends amplification of 15 to 200 W. Each cabinet measures 1062 mm tall, 244 mm wide and 328 mm deep and weighs 20.6 kg; with the plinth fitted the footprint grows to 1116 x 357 x 328 mm.

Engineering and use context

All four large diaphragms in the cabinet share the same diameter and aluminium material, so the Uni-Q cone, the long-throw woofer and both ABRs are matched in size. The smaller Q750 uses the same 2.5-way reflex topology with 165 mm units, a 25 mm dome and a 2.5 kHz crossover. Against it the Q950 moves the crossover lower, gains sensitivity and rated maximum output, extends the bass limit and accepts more amplifier power, at the cost of a heavier cabinet and a lower impedance minimum. The successor Q11 Meta switches to a three-way concept using a 100 mm midrange cone, a 19 mm tweeter and three 165 mm bass cones, and it drops to a 4 ohm nominal rating.

Pairing

The high sensitivity allows modest amplifiers near the lower power limit to drive the Q950, while the low impedance minimum means any partnering amplifier should cope with a load that dips far under the nominal figure.
