The p1 is a passive floorstanding speaker from Manger Audio, the family company in Mellrichstadt, Germany, led by Daniela Manger, daughter of founder Josef Manger. It is built around the Manger Sound Transducer, a bending-wave driver Josef Manger began developing in 1968 and finished in 1974. The p1 pairs it with a woofer in a sealed floorstanding cabinet, with the whole speaker made in Germany to very close tolerances.
Key specs that matter
It uses a flat Manger Sound Transducer (MST) and a 200 mm woofer with a carbon fibre and paper sandwich cone and a 42 mm voice coil, in a sealed enclosure. The crossover sits at 360 Hz. Frequency range is 40 Hz to 45 kHz, impedance is 4 ohms, sensitivity is specified at 89 dB and maximum output is 106 dB peak. Recommended power is 50 to 200 W. The cabinet is 1139 mm tall, 270 mm wide and 214 mm deep, at 31 kg.
Engineering and use context
The MST is a flat, low-mass, multilayer impregnated textile disc that is flexible in bending. Its diaphragm does not move as a piston. The voice coil sends transverse waves across its surface, like ripples in a pond, so the radiating area shrinks as frequency rises. This gives wide dispersion and phase coherence from one driver. Manger states a rise time of 13 microseconds. With the crossover at 360 Hz, the MST covers almost the entire midrange and treble, leaving only the lowest band to the woofer. The MST fitted here is the W06 version. The woofer's sealed box rolls off gradually and avoids port noise. Inside, the MST and the woofer each have their own compartment, internal struts suppress housing resonances, and the outer edges are rounded. Bi-wiring terminals are WBT nextgen Plasma Protect copper, and the speaker stands on Manger cf1 feet of precision plastic. Manger also uses conjugate load matching in the bass, which smooths the impedance and phase. Finishes include silk matt paint to any RAL colour, Nextel, wood veneer and ultra-high gloss. Musicians including Hubert von Goisern and Nils Petter Molvær use Manger speakers. Each unit is individually handcrafted by the family business, with tolerances down to a thousandth of a millimetre. The active s1 shares the cabinet and drivers.
Pairing
The low impedance calls for solid-state amplifiers comfortable driving 4 ohm loads, with 100 W or more for large rooms. The p1's wide dispersion suits rooms of 20 to 40 m2 and seating away from the central axis.
Alternatives
Manger Audio's s1 builds Class AB amplifiers into the same cabinet.
