The MaYa II from AKu Audio is a two-way active monitor with built-in amplification and DSP, designed for studio work and home listening alike. It sits on a dedicated hand-painted MDF stand with metal plates, which raises it to floorstanding height, and AKu Audio presents it as a high precision monitor rather than a tower. In the current range it sits between the Onar standmount and the compact Perix system.
Key specs that matter
A 7 inch anodised aluminium woofer with a high-excursion, symmetrical drive neodymium motor handles bass and midrange, and a 1 inch textile dome tweeter with a symmetrical neodymium motor covers the treble. A custom AKu-Hypex Ncore two-channel amplifier module gives 150 W to the woofer and 150 W to the tweeter, with distortion of 0.006 percent at half power and an average of 0.2 percent at 95 dB. Signal to noise ratio is 118 dB and amplifier efficiency is 92 percent. The DSP extends the range to 10 Hz to 50 kHz, while the measured response is 49 Hz to 21 kHz within plus or minus 0.5 dB in a 2pi configuration. Maximum SPL reaches 110 dB, and dispersion extends up to 19 kHz at 45 degrees.
Engineering and use context
AKu Audio, based in Athens, Greece, builds this enclosure in multiple layers with non-parallel surfaces to limit internal standing waves. On its own the speaker is 45 cm high, 32 cm wide and 49 cm deep and weighs 19.2 kg; on its stand it rises to 107 cm, with the stand 33.3 cm wide and 14.5 kg. Three DSP presets are stored - P1 Flat, P2 Harman and P3 Studio - and AKu Audio offers custom tunings. Connections are a Neutrik XLR socket taking balanced analogue or AES up to 192 kHz, RCA for analogue or S/PDIF up to 192 kHz, and optical Toslink up to 96 kHz, so a digital source can connect without a separate DAC. Colour schemes are Orange with Black, Black with White, White with Black, Black with Beige and Full Black.
Pairing
The balanced XLR and AES input suits a preamplifier, a studio interface or a streamer with digital output, and the RCA coaxial input takes most CD transports. Since each cabinet contains its own amplifier module, external amplifiers and speaker wire are unnecessary, leaving mains power and a signal lead to each speaker to connect. A room of about 20 m2 fits its output.
Alternatives
Also from AKu Audio, the Talos is a larger active three-way floorstander with a 12 inch woofer, two 7 inch midrange units and a beryllium tweeter.
