The MG2.7i marks the return of the two series, one of the earliest product families at Magnepan, the American maker of Magneplanar panel speakers. Magnepan places it between the MG1.7i and the MG3.7i in both price and performance, and describes it either as an MG1.7i with a True Ribbon Tweeter or as a lighter MG3.7i for rooms where the larger panel would not fit. The standard version was introduced at USD 5,995 per pair, and the upgraded MG2.7x at USD 10,000.

Key specs that matter

The published range is 40 Hz to 30 kHz within plus or minus 3 dB. Nominal impedance is 4 ohm, and sensitivity is 86 dB at 500 Hz for 2.83 V at a distance of 1 m. The panel stands 180 cm high and 56 cm wide at a depth of only 4.4 cm, and each speaker weighs 22 to 24 kg. Magnepan covers the pair with a limited three-year warranty for the original buyer. Fabric options are black, grey, off-white and cherry white, and the standard stiles come in dark cherry, natural oak or aluminium in black, silver and gold, while the X version adds acorn oak, bamboo and red or black aluminium.

Engineering and use context

This is a three-way dipole in which the bass and midrange sections carry aluminium foil bonded to Mylar, while the treble comes from a 102 cm True Ribbon Tweeter whose aluminium foil hangs freely without any substrate. It is the least expensive full-range Magnepan and the smallest model apart from the desktop Mini Maggie to use this tweeter. Magnets sit on one side of the diaphragm only, unlike the costlier models. Jumper-replaceable resistors in the midrange and tweeter circuits allow the level of each section to be trimmed, and a 1 ohm midrange resistor and a half-ohm tweeter resistor are supplied. The tweeter can face the inside or outside of the pair, fuses protect the drivers, and the binding posts take banana plugs but not spade lugs. The 2.7x version reduces parts count and junctions, uses better components in the signal path and matches crossover points between left and right speakers. Both versions ship with black or off-white T-feet, and oval bases cost USD 250 extra.
