The Magneplanar MG1.7i is a three-way, full-range panel loudspeaker from Magnepan, handcrafted in the United States, placed below the MG2.7i and MG3.7i in the current range. Its predecessor, the MG1.7, arrived in July 2010 at USD 1,995 per pair as the successor to the MG1.6 after a long gap between models, and it was the first Magnepan design to use quasi-ribbon technology for every driver section. The current 1.7i is listed at USD 2,995 per pair.
Key specs that matter
Magnepan quotes a response of 40 Hz to 24 kHz, a nominal impedance of 4 ohm and a sensitivity of 86 dB measured at 500 Hz with 2.83 V at 1 m. Each panel is about 48 cm wide, 165 cm tall and 5 cm deep, and weighs 17 kg, while the shipping carton weighs 44 kg. The bass section offers about 2,850 cm2 of radiating area, and the tweeter and super tweeter strips together measure 2 x 122 cm. Fabric comes in black, grey, off-white or cherry white, and the standard side trims are dark cherry, natural oak, or black, silver and gold aluminium, with red aluminium and black wood reserved for the upgraded X version.
Engineering and use context
All three sections - mid/bass, tweeter and super tweeter - use aluminium foil bonded to a Mylar diaphragm, the arrangement Magnepan calls quasi-ribbon. An AC signal in the foil conductor reacts against a fixed array of magnet strips mounted behind the film, and the diaphragm radiates as a dipole, forward and backward in equal measure. Speakers ship as mirror-imaged pairs identified by serial number - unit 1 carries its tweeter near the left edge and unit 2 near the right - so the high-frequency strips can face inward or outward, and Magnepan suggests tweeters inside for one central listener and outside for a larger audience. The MG1.7 also brought aluminium trim in place of the earlier wood. In the box come four T-feet with eight bolts already fitted, four long tilting bolts with nylon washers, two 4 A 3AG fuses and an Allen wrench. A pair of 1 ohm resistors, fitted in place of the tweeter jumpers, can lower the treble section by 1 to 2 dB on recordings with excess treble.
Pairing
Magnepan asks for a powerful or high-current amplifier able to deliver at least 120 W per channel RMS into its nominal load, and sets no upper limit on power or current.
Alternatives
The Magnepan MG2.7i keeps a quasi-ribbon bass and midrange but adds a True Ribbon Tweeter in a taller panel.
