The Legend L800 is the top floorstanding loudspeaker of Polk Audio's Legend series, sold as separate left and right units at USD 2,999 each from November 2019. It uses Polk's SDA-PRO technology, in which each speaker carries two sets of drivers on angled baffles. It is designed as a full-range speaker for music and home cinema.

Key specs that matter

Each speaker has two 1-inch Pinnacle Ring Radiator tweeters, two 5.25-inch Turbine Cone midrange drivers and two 10-inch woofers, with two three-way crossovers at 370 Hz and 2.8 kHz. The response is 32 Hz to 38 kHz at -3 dB and 24 Hz to 50 kHz overall. Sensitivity is 87 dB at 2.83 V, impedance is 4 ohms nominal with a 2.8 ohm minimum, and Polk gives an amplifier range of 25 to 300 W, with 100 W recommended. The midrange enclosure is sealed, and the woofers are loaded by Polk's Power Port. Each speaker is 1,234.5 mm high, 455.6 mm wide and 441.4 mm deep and weighs 53.5 kg, or 68.5 kg packed. Finishes are Brown Walnut and Black Ash.

Engineering and use context

SDA, Stereo Dimensional Array, uses a second set of drivers in each speaker, and the SDA-PRO version sets the two baffles at 15 degrees so that no toe-in is required. An SDA interconnect cable about 3.7 m long, supplied with the pair, links the left and right speakers. The Pinnacle Ring Radiator tweeter uses a ring-shaped diaphragm, and the Turbine Cone midrange has a foam core with a moulded turbine pattern that stiffens it. The crossovers follow the Orth design. SDA-PRO is the current form of the Stereo Dimensional Array technology that Polk first used in its speakers of the 1980s, and it requires the two speakers of a pair to be linked. Sealing the midrange section keeps it separate from the pressure of the woofers, and the Power Port reduces port noise at the woofer outlet. The L800 accepts the L900 height module, which is Dolby Atmos certified and designed to meet DTS:X requirements. Spikes, pads and a magnetic grille are included.

Pairing

Such a low impedance needs an amplifier or receiver rated for low loads, ideally at the recommended power. Given its deep bass and large cabinet, the L800 suits rooms of 20 m2 and more. For home cinema, the L900 module adds overhead channels.

Alternatives

The Polk Audio Legend L600 is the smaller Legend floorstander without SDA, using two 7-inch woofers and one 5.25-inch midrange, rated at 34 Hz to 38 kHz and 86 dB.
