The Legato Semis is a floor-standing two-way model by Sonner Audio, positioned in the Legato series between the compact Legato Unum and the larger Legato Duo. It uses the same driver pair, crossover frequency and electrical ratings as the Unum, placed in a tall floorstanding enclosure. According to the company, the Legato series was designed to accept either tube or transistor amplification of modest or high power. Above the Legato line the company offers its Reference series, built around the Allegro Unum MKII monitor with an aluminium front baffle. The company was set up by two partners trained in industrial and electrical engineering who worked on their speaker designs for 25 years before the launch.

Key specs that matter

Each Semis carries a 1 inch ring radiator tweeter and a 5.5 inch mid-woofer with a coated paper cone, divided by a crossover at 2.5 kHz in a bass ported cabinet. Frequency response is listed as 43 Hz to 23 kHz, with sensitivity of 87.5 dB. The nominal impedance is 8 ohm and the lowest point is specified at 5 ohm. Sonner recommends amplifiers of 10 W to 200 W. Each speaker measures roughly 38 cm wide, 68 cm deep and 105 cm high, with a weight of about 27 kg.

Engineering and use context

Sonner builds the Semis around a one piece molded curved cabinet instead of a box made from flat joined panels. Its filter network carries the maker label of a Symmetrical Panoramic crossover, and Sonner uses the same molded cabinet method across every Legato model. Sonner, which launched in 2015, states that its founders drew on 20 years of engineering, business and manufacturing experience gained at large multinational corporations. With only one mid-woofer in a floorstanding body, the low frequency limit is identical to that of the stand-mount Unum. Finishes listed for the Semis are cherry and red rosewood.

Pairing

Modest minimum power needs and a fairly benign impedance curve put low-output valve amplifiers inside the range Sonner specifies, while the generous ceiling also covers larger transistor integrated and power amplifiers.

The Sonner Legato Duo is the bigger tower of the Legato family, a 2.5-way design adding a 6 inch aluminium cone driver, rated at 90 dB with extension to 37 Hz and a 4 ohm nominal load.
