Sonner Audio of Merrimack, New Hampshire, offers the Legato Duo as a 2.5-way tower in its Legato line, which is priced below the Allegro Reference series. Gunawan Surya is named as the founder, and the business began trading in 2016 after a long development period near Boston by engineers with industrial and electrical backgrounds. Pricing was USD 9,500 per pair in North America and GBP 8,900 in the United Kingdom.

Key specs that matter

Three drivers share a bass-ported enclosure. At the top is a 1-inch ring radiator tweeter, below it a 5.5-inch coated paper cone mid-woofer, and lower still a 6-inch custom woofer with an aluminium cone. The filter splits the signal at 200 Hz and 2.5 kHz. Sonner states 90 dB sensitivity and a range of 37 Hz to 23 kHz. Each speaker measures 38 cm wide, 68 cm deep and 110 cm tall, and it weighs 26.5 kg. Finishes are semigloss red rosewood, satin black and cherry.

Engineering and use context

With the low first crossover point, the aluminium woofer is confined to the bass region, while the paper mid-woofer carries the band up to the tweeter handover. The body follows Sonner's one-piece moulded curve construction, shaped as a rounded V in plan and tilted from front to back so that the output of the drivers arrives in time alignment. Two reflex ports vent through the rear panel of the cabinet. Inside, the Symmetrical Panoramic crossover is wired point to point, and Sonner claims a flat impedance curve across the whole frequency range. A leather front baffle attaches with magnets and can be swapped for another colour, a grille cloth is supplied to protect the drivers, and the cabinet stands on trapezoidal black bases. Only one pair of binding posts is provided per speaker, which rules out bi-wiring. Sonner also describes the Legato models as easy to place.

Pairing

Sonner designed the Legato series to be driven by small or large valve amplifiers as well as transistor units, and for the Legato Duo it recommends amplifier power between 10 W and 300 W. Nominal impedance is 4 ohm with a minimum of 3.8 ohm. The company adds that most valve and solid-state amplifiers can drive the speaker because of its sensitivity rating.
