The Jersey MC170 belongs to the MC170 range as its three-way tower from Cabasse, the French company with workshops in Brittany whose history goes back to 1950. The range also includes the Antigua MC170 stand-mount, and Cabasse offers an MC170 5.1 home cinema system built from these models. The manufacturer lists the Jersey at EUR 499.
Key specs that matter
A two-way coaxial midrange-tweeter of type 10T15MC works with two 17 cm woofers of type 17TN20. The crossover divides the signal at 700 Hz and 3,600 Hz. The rated range is 57 Hz to 20,000 Hz and sensitivity is 90 dB at 1 W and 1 m. Nominal impedance is 8 ohm, with a minimum of 3.2 ohm. Cabasse gives 100 W nominal and 700 W peak power handling. The cabinet is 99 cm high, 21 cm wide and 30 cm deep, and weighs 15 kg. Four finishes are available - all black, whitewashed oak, dark oak and black oak.
Engineering and use context
The design follows the HDSE principle, short for Homogeneous Distribution of Sonic Energy. Cabasse bases its filters on anechoic measurements taken both on axis and over 360 degrees, so the crossover controls directivity and the total power radiated into the room and not only the frontal response. The coaxial midrange-tweeter is derived from the unit developed for the Eole satellite speakers, which puts both upper bands on a single axis. The woofer basket and cone shape were drawn for mechanical rigidity and a low resonance frequency, and each long-throw voice coil sits on a Kapton former. That coil is vented around its full circumference to help it shed heat and handle high power. No port opens on the front or rear - the cabinet uses a vertical vent that radiates in all directions around 360 degrees. The slim cabinet keeps a narrow front while the two woofers provide the cone area for bass extension.
Pairing
The low impedance minimum suggests an amplifier that stays stable with difficult loads, and the good sensitivity means a modest integrated amplifier can drive the Jersey to normal listening levels. For home cinema, the MC170 5.1 system combines the tower with the matching range models, and a Santorin subwoofer can take the lowest octaves below the rated lower limit.
Alternatives
The Cabasse Java MC40 is a larger floorstander with a BC10 coaxial unit and two Duocell woofers in a 24 kg cabinet.
