The Jade 20 sits in the middle of the Polish maker Pylon Audio's Jade range, positioned between the compact Jade 10 and the larger Jade 30. The series follows a concept the maker describes as classic at heart and modern in soul, pairing vintage styling with current driver technology. Pylon suggests the Jade 20 for rooms of 18 to 45 m2.
Key specs that matter
The 12-inch midwoofer was designed in-house. It is the Pylon Audio PSW 32.8 CS with a classic paper diaphragm, and the high frequencies come from the PST 25PO.8, a BMS compression driver. The crossover point sits near 1,200 Hz, with a 12 dB per octave slope on the woofer and 18 dB per octave on the tweeter, which has a 1-inch format. Pylon specifies an impedance of 8 ohm, a frequency response of 35 Hz to 20 kHz and efficiency of 91 dB. Power handling is 140 W nominal and 220 W maximum. Each cabinet measures 386 x 640 x 420 mm and weighs 35 kg.
Engineering and use context
The compression driver operates in a short throat whose Tractrix flare was designed specially for the Jade range, which Pylon says avoids the harshness associated with stage horn speakers. Solid MDF panels form the enclosure, with ribbing and reinforcements in key areas, internal bracing and natural sheep's wool damping, and a long rectangular bass-reflex port is located at the front. Profiled feet give the cabinet a gentle backward tilt that aims the output at ear level of a seated listener. Alternatively the speaker can sit on an optional stand that measures 356 x 217 x 390 mm, weighs about 3.8 kg per unit and angles the column by 4 degrees. The stand is a wooden frame with an aluminium support. A classic grille in acoustic fabric attaches with pegs, and two grille styles are available. Two finishes are offered, both using natural American walnut veneer, one coated with PURE oil-wax and one in black with a 0 percent gloss lacquer.
Pairing
Pylon offers the optional stand in finishes that match the speaker, and in the UK it adds GBP 695 to a speaker pair listed at GBP 3,745. The Jade 10 is the smaller model of the range with its own optional stand, while the three-way Jade 30 targets rooms from 25 m2 upward. Its nominal impedance is an easy load, so most amplifiers cover the requirement of the Jade 20.
Alternatives
The Pylon Audio Jade 30 adds a separate midrange driver and a 15-inch woofer in a taller three-way cabinet.
