The Guru 20 is the most compact floorstander in the Swedish Guru Audio range, which grew out of Ingvar Öhman's designs. Its enclosure combines steel and MDF, and it shares its mid/bass driver and tweeter with the Guru 12 stand-mount. The larger floorstanding cabinet extends the low-frequency response compared with the stand-mounts.

Key specs that matter

It uses a 125 mm polypropylene mid/bass and a 19 mm soft dome tweeter in a vented enclosure that Guru describes as a Helmholtz resonator. Typical in-room response is 28 Hz to 30 kHz, sensitivity is 88 dB at 2.83 V and nominal impedance is 5 ohms, with a 4 ohm minimum. Recommended amplifier power is 20 W to 160 W, and the crossover band spans 2 to 7 kHz. The cabinet measures 188 mm wide, 828 mm high and 220 mm deep.

Engineering and use context

The mid/bass is Guru's own polypropylene driver, a material that combines light weight with internal damping. The resonator loads it through a tuned air volume and opening. Like all Guru speakers, the Guru 20 is designed to stand close to a solid wall, ideally less than 5 cm away and no more than 25 cm, and Guru notes that moving it closer adds bass while moving it away reduces it. The speakers are meant to be toed in so that the outer side edges are just visible from the listening position, which widens the best listening area. The cabinet mixes steel and MDF, pairing the stiffness of a metal structure with the damping of a wood composite. Guru quotes response as typical in-room figures rather than anechoic ones, which reflects the company's approach of designing for the way a speaker behaves in a real room. Like other Guru models, the Guru 20 is voiced with the listening room and the stereo system as a whole in mind, following the psychoacoustic principles that Guru applies across its range. The cabinet is small for a floorstander, and the steel parts give it an industrial look. Finishes are fog black, white oak and walnut. Guru was established in 2007, its loudspeakers are handmade within the EU, and its catalogue also includes the Guru 8, Guru 28, Guru 42 and the Q10.

Pairing

Guru states that its speakers work with any good amplifier designed for 4 to 8 ohm loads, so the Guru 20 pairs with most integrated amplifiers. Its compact size and wall placement suit rooms of 12 to 25 m2.

Alternatives

Guru Audio's Guru 28 is the larger floorstander with a separate 102 mm midrange and two 110 mm woofers.
