The Exquisite Midi Grand 3.0 is a floorstanding loudspeaker from Kharma, carrying the type code EXQ-MDGR-3.0-GS. The Dutch company places it in its Exquisite Collection, where every model uses a diamond tweeter as standard equipment. The 3.0 generation arrives with a newly developed stand that is integrated into the cabinet rather than supplied as a separate part.

Kharma lists it as a 3.5-way system. Kharma specifies 500 W RMS and 1000 W program power, a nominal impedance of 4 ohm and a frequency range from 23 Hz to 90 kHz. Efficiency is 91 dB at 2.83 V and 1 m, and maximum SPL reaches 118 dB. Each cabinet holds two 1 inch Diamond concave tweeters, two 7 inch Kharma Omega-7 mid-frequency drivers and two 11 inch Nomex Kevlar low-frequency drivers. Dimensions are 1800 mm in height, 455 mm in width and 745 mm in depth.

Engineering and use context

Kharma calls the drivers the engine of this loudspeaker and puts particular weight on the pair of diamond tweeters, whose cone it regards as the most essential part of a tweeter. Every driver type appears in pairs here, from the tweeters through the Omega-7 midrange units to the large Nomex Kevlar woofers. The integrated stand decouples the speaker from its surroundings by cutting the contact surface with the floor. Although the cabinet appears to rest directly on solid aluminium disks, the actual contact is made by just four tungsten balls of 8 mm. The stand can be tilted up and down with the Kharma key, a tool that is delivered with the speaker.

Pairing

The rear panel has separate connectors for the mid and high section and for the low section, which makes the speaker suitable for bi-amping or bi-wiring. For a single run of cable, silver bridge terminals link the two sections. Given its demanding load and power rating, a solid-state amplifier rich in current is the natural match, and in a bi-amped setup two stereo or mono amplifiers can feed the two sections separately. Kharma also builds the Exquisite MP1000 amplifier and Exquisite cables so the whole chain can come from Kharma.
