The Enigma Veyron 4D, type EV-4D-1.0, is a floorstanding loudspeaker from the Enigma Veyron collection of Kharma, the company based in Breda. In height it falls between the EV-2D and the compact EV-5D, and its cabinet brings together the Omega-F drivers, diamond tweeters and diamond spike disk suspension that Kharma develops itself. Kharma describes it as a 4-way system.
Key specs that matter
High frequencies are handled by two diamond concave tweeters, one of 1 inch and one of 2 inches, the midrange by a single 7-inch Kharma Omega-F driver and the low end by two 11-inch Omega-F drivers. Kharma rates the 4D at 400 W RMS and 800 W program power, with a frequency range of 24 Hz to 90 kHz, an efficiency of 92 dB at 2.83 V and 1 m and a maximum output of 119 dB SPL. Nominal impedance is 4 ohm, and the minimum falls to 1.8 ohm. The speaker is 1515 mm tall, 425 mm wide and 835 mm deep.
Engineering and use context
The cabinet is assembled from 5-axis CNC-milled Bulletwood parts, chosen for high density and stiffness, and the same material is used for every Enigma Veyron speaker. Omega-F drivers take all iron out of the magnet system and rely on a patented grouping of neodymium magnets, which removes the Foucault or eddy currents that iron parts pick up from a moving voice coil. Under the cabinet, the diamond spike disk suspension places hard balls on diamonds so that the speaker touches the floor over a minimal area, and a hex key turned at the top of each leg adjusts the height. The standard finish combines high gloss Piano Black, Macassar wood panels and gold trimming details, and Kharma will change almost every visible part, including other gloss or matt paints, other veneers and different trim, with a leather-covered EV4D Hermes version shown as one example. Delivery is in a crate that opens at the bottom to form a ramp, and Kharma suggests four people for tilting the speaker upright.
Pairing
With its very low impedance minimum, the 4D needs amplification that stays stable into very low impedance. Kharma wants the speaker bi-amped or bi-wired, with the left terminal for the mid and treble section and the right for the woofers, and supplies bridge terminals for a single pair of cables, which should then be connected on the mid/high side. Kharma lists 50 W as a typical minimum and advises choosing more power rather than risking clipping.
Alternatives
The Kharma Enigma Veyron 5D is the smallest speaker in the collection, a 3.5-way floorstander with two 7-inch Omega-F drivers and a 300 W RMS rating.
