The Enigma Veyron 1D, also called EV-1D, is a passive tower from the Dutch company Kharma, part of the Enigma Veyron collection which Kharma built as a complete system of loudspeakers, electronics and cables. Charles van Oosterum created the collection. The standard finish is high-gloss black with gold trim and Macassar veneer, and Kharma states that other finishes can be ordered.
Key specs that matter
Each speaker carries fourteen drivers. Four 25 mm and four 50 mm concave diamond tweeters form what Kharma calls the Diamond Lotus, with a combined surface of around 400 square centimetres. Two 7 inch Omega-F drivers cover the midrange and four 11 inch Omega-F drivers handle the bass. Kharma quotes 23 Hz to 90 kHz, 97 dB sensitivity at 2.83 V and 1 m, a maximum level of 127 dB, a nominal impedance of 4 ohm with a minimum of 2.3 ohm, and power handling of 1,000 W RMS and 2,000 W program. Without its stand the cabinet stands 2,179 mm tall, 420 mm wide and 790 mm deep, and each speaker weighs 500 kg net.
Engineering and use context
The Omega-F drivers were developed in house. The F refers to the absence of Foucault currents, because the magnet motor contains no iron that the voice coil could induce eddy currents into. Cabinets are assembled from 100 mm thick Bulletwood parts cut on a 5-axis CNC machine. The speaker rests on a Triple Diamond Stand, and all Enigma Veyron speakers meet the floor through a minimal contact surface of balls resting on diamonds. The EV-1D-1.1 owner's guide describes the design as a double 4-way system with a Double Kharma Connection Terminal, where one terminal drives the upper half and the other the lower half. A pair ships in two crates together with top covers, M10 bolts, a tilting accessory and movers for hard and carpeted floors, and the crate is built so that a forklift or hoist can lift it. Kharma gives five years of warranty when the warranty card is registered.
Pairing
Because the speaker is split into two halves with separate terminals, bi-amping is mandatory, and with only one terminal connected only half of the drivers play. Kharma asks that every run of speaker cable be identical in make, model and length. Within the collection the maker offers matching Enigma Veyron MP1000 amplifiers, a power block, cables and an audio rack.
Alternatives
Kharma also builds the Enigma Veyron 2D, another floorstander of this collection.
