The Edena Evolution is a two-way floorstander from Apertura, the French company founded in 1982 by Christian Yvon, who earlier designed speakers for Goldmund, including the Apologue, and worked for Focal and Sonus Faber. Apertura speakers are handmade near Nantes. The Edena Evolution, introduced in 2018 for the company's 35th anniversary, improves on the Edena with a new tweeter and a completely new crossover.

Key specs that matter

It uses a 22 cm mid/woofer with a woven polypropylene composite cone and a ribbon tweeter of 8 x 120 mm, crossing over at 2.8 kHz. The cabinet is bass reflex. Frequency response is 35 Hz to 30 kHz (+/-3 dB), sensitivity is 89 dB at 2.83 V and impedance is 8 ohms. With its stands, it measures 328 mm wide, 317 mm deep and 1149 mm high, with a weight of 32.4 kg per speaker.

Engineering and use context

The mid/woofer uses what Apertura calls an isotactic matrix cone, woven polypropylene tapes combining stiffness, low mass and damping, with a long voice coil for linear excursion. The new ribbon tweeter uses a flat metallised polymer diaphragm with twice the radiating area of the Edena's tweeter, so it moves less for a given output, reducing distortion and raising dynamic capacity. A felt crescent next to it controls its directivity. The crossover uses Apertura's own DRIM structure, with triple attenuation slopes and phase control across the band. Each pair of drivers is measured and the crossover values adjusted to match, and the network is hand-wired on a circuit board with 140 micron copper, laid out to avoid magnetic coupling between parts. Internal wiring is silver-plated oxygen-free copper with Teflon insulation, and the binding posts are silver-plated copper. The speaker stands on a five-point aluminium base with spikes, silver anodised for the white finish and black for others. Six standard finishes include satin and gloss American walnut, figured maple, rosewood, piano black and cream white. Apertura stresses that nearly every stage of production, from driver testing and matching to crossover assembly and final measurement, is done in-house. The Edena Evolution continues the line of Apertura's earlier Tanagra Signature and Variation.

Pairing

The benign load and moderate sensitivity work with amplifiers from about 30 W, including valve designs. The Edena Evolution suits rooms of 18 to 35 m2.
