The Double Impact is a four-way tower from the Utah company Tekton Design, sold at USD 3,000 per pair in the Full Towers section of the catalogue. Designed by company founder Eric Alexander, it is also sold as centre, surround and in-wall versions for home cinema, and the Double Impact SE, with upgraded drivers and components, sits above it.

Key specs that matter

A Double Impact cabinet holds two 10-inch Pendragon woofers, two 6-inch mid-bass drivers and a seven-tweeter array. Frequency response is 30 Hz to 30 kHz, and the maker quotes ±1 dB between 70 Hz and 20 kHz. Sensitivity is 98.82 dB at 2.83 V and 1 m. Nominal impedance is 4 ohms, with an 8 ohm version available on request, and power handling is 400 W. A 2 ohm version with a four-plus-one tweeter layout is also offered. The cabinet measures about 1,372 x 305 x 451 mm and weighs about 53.5 kg.

Engineering and use context

In the array, six outer tweeters work as an upper midrange section around one central tweeter that covers the highest frequencies, so the small domes share the region between the mid-bass drivers and the top octave. This arrangement is part of Tekton's patented polygon-oriented tweeter design, US Patent 9247339. With two 10-inch woofers and two 6-inch mid-bass drivers, each band has two cones, which spreads the load and adds radiating area. The cabinet is almost twice as heavy as the smaller Electron tower, which uses the same four-way principle with 8-inch woofers. The choice of impedance versions lets the buyer match the load to the amplifier. Tekton lists bi-wire and bi-amp terminals as options at USD 75 each, along with a choice of paint finishes, grilles and footers, and the speakers are built in the USA.

Pairing

Being efficient, the Double Impact reaches high levels with little power, so both low-power tube amplifiers and larger solid-state models within its power handling suit it. The standard load favours amplifiers stable at low impedance, while the higher-impedance version is easier for tube designs. Centre and surround versions let a home cinema use matching speakers all around. In a 20 m2 room, the deep bass extension leaves a subwoofer optional.
