The Codex is a four-way floorstanding loudspeaker from Audio Physic, built as the first model in the range to feature the brand's revolutionary PowerTrain technology alongside a newly developed HHCM SL midrange driver. Audio Physic describes this platform as achieving unrivalled resolution and spatial imaging within its class, while maintaining the elegant, minimalist design language the brand is known for.

Rated response is 28Hz to 40kHz. Sensitivity is 89dB into a demanding 4 ohm load. The four-way reflex-loaded design uses a 10-inch long-throw bass driver housed in its own internal cabinet chamber, handing off to a 7-inch driver at the front of the cabinet from 100Hz upward - a division of labour Audio Physic states keeps bass reproduction confident and controlled across virtually any signal. A dedicated 150mm aluminium-cone midrange and a further mid-bass driver complete the array, each chassis given its own individual chamber within the cabinet so interactions through shared air volume are entirely eliminated. The innovative driver mounting reduces the sonic effects of micro-vibration to a genuine minimum, since the drivers make no direct contact with the front baffle, preventing stray partial oscillations from disturbing playback. At approximately 119.5cm tall, numerous internal braces combined with extremely stiff open-cell ceramic foam elements lend the cabinet superb structural stability without meaningfully reducing internal volume. The crossover is distributed across several levels using first-class components placed close behind each respective driver for maximum signal fidelity, terminating in high-end WBT nextgen binding posts that are themselves mechanically decoupled from the cabinet body.

Sound and use context

Expect a full-bodied, curiously self-effacing presentation rather than an aggressively analytical one - the Codex imposes very little of its own character, letting music simply dissolve and delight, with fluid midrange, detailed yet smooth treble, and agile, well-timed bass capable of genuine surprises when seriously deep or impactful low frequencies arrive.

Pairing

The demanding 4 ohm load calls for an amplifier with reasonable current delivery, though the considerable 89dB sensitivity keeps overall amplifier requirements within reach of most serious integrated amplifiers.

Alternatives

Audio Physic's Codex RQ adds RECOTec cabinet construction and Q-SET bass tuning for even greater precision and room-specific flexibility, worth the further investment if this standard Codex's already impressive resolution still leaves ambitions unmet.
